Forums - Politics Discussion - Exit polls show dual setback for Austerity: France and Greece

Exit polling shows Sarkozy going down in the runoff against Hollande (which some French rightists have to be steamed about for reasons entirely separate from policy. Numbers showed that there were more people voting for the right than for the left in the first round of presidential elections. If all those rightists had showed up to the polls, Sarkozy would have won), and so now France enters an epoch that is a political reaction to Austerity, itself a political reaction to the 08 financial meltdown.

Second in Greece, where it seems to be a defeat for the mainstream and for austerity, as the mainstream Right party (New Democracy) and the mainstream left party (PASOK) between collected at most 37% of the seats, not enough to form a government. Important because the two mainstream parties were the ones in support of the bailout, while the other 63% of seats going to a panoply of parties that are not as friendly to the idea.

Sell your Euros now, boys

Nice to see the back of the arrogant little creep Sarkozy, but.... it could be a bad day for Europe and the global economies.

I was thinking about you, actually, remembering your outspoken comments against Sarkozy (the time he spent in your sig, for instance) and thought, "well, be careful what you wish for..."

Although one can't take Hollande entirely at his rhetorical word. Let's just see how campaign promises translate into policy in this case...

I don't follow French politics, at all. Why don't people like Sarkozy? I'd assume any French leader who doesn't get invaded a successful one

Austerity for the European debt crisis is like Chemotherapy for cancer ...

I'd vote "hold" on Euros... they make for some classy toilet paper. Also, they burn quite nicely - great for those harsh winter conditions.
