Forums - Gaming Discussion - Honestly, why is Killzone 2 so highly hyped?

Killzone 2 better end up being better (if not MUCH better) than Resistance 2. The game is Sony's flagship title. They have given GG 3 years and over $40 mil. to work on this game, and dedicated an entire E3 press event to it's official gameplay unveiling. With all that effort, if they are trumped by Insomniac who puts out a game every freakin' year (praise to them for it, their games always kick ass), I think Sony will be kinda pissed. They'll be thinking, why didn't we just throw tons of cash at Insomniac instead? They managed to make the better game without an assload of support.

I'll be surprised if Killzone 2 turns out much better than RFOM 2 (or even better at all).  Mainly because:

 a)  Insomniac have RFOM under their belts and it was better all round than Killzone 1

 b) RFOM 2 is coming on back of what I think of as popular hype - i.e. I liked RFOM and its very likely sequel will improve on it in lots of ways

c) R&C showed how far they'd pushed the original engine from RFOM in a fairly short time and I fully expect from the snippets that have been released RFOM 2 is going to see the engine pushed ever further again

d) the recent information makes RFOM2 look huge!  60 players on multi - seperate 8 player coop campaign, coop for main campaign, etc.  (guess the Insomniac guys really don't sleep)

This is not to say KZ2 might not also be a great game of course - just that RFOM is in a sense already proven and RFOM2 is expected to be great, while KZ2 is still more about hype than anything concrete.

It get the feelling KZ2 has got caught in that nasty loop where something keeps topping it a little in the market so they try and push the game in development to catch up (used to happen with FPS on PC all the time).

They need to lock in a level of excellence to go for and get it out before (and reasonably well away from) RFOM2 or it will steal its thunder for sure.  Hell, RFOM2 is building on plus 2M sales base and most PS3 owners I know really like it and buying the second game is a given for them (me too).

I think KZ2 needs to be out July/August or September at the very latest as Insomniac also don't tend to miss release dates they've issued so I doubt RFOM2 is going to be delayed much and if KZ2 launches too close and doesn't review sweetly could see people wait for RFOM2 instead for FPS (SP and Online).

Around the Network

- technical demonstration that the PS3 is able (or not) to do thing that the Xbox360 can't do

- people have still in the mind the cinematic released in 2005

- people want to play good immersive games

- people like to hope/hype ^^

Time to Work !

If you think it's hyped now, wait until about 2 months before release, expect Sony to go all out on the advertising for this monster.

I don't know.... maybe because some people out there don't believe that a game being on an "evil" Sony console bars it from the possibility of actually being a good game? Look at UT3, I played it tonight, I've NEVER been good with FPS on computers because I couldn't get the WASD + Mouse motion right. But after playing UT3 tonight, I am convinced that FPS games can have both great graphics and great controls on the PS3. As far as this etherial "gameplay" concept that I hear all the Wii fanboys talk about, just because a game doesn't have you breathing into a microphone or flailing your arms around doesn't mean it isn't fun (and has good "gameplay").

Have you played any FPS's on Wii yet? No? Didn't think so.

On topic,

I think people are hyping this game because it looks fantastic and it's really one of the few really exceptional things people can point to and be proud of concerning their console of choice. Judging either way at this point in time is pre-mature, but their is no reason (not even the track record of this game) that says this game won't be amazing. If you judge something before you actually play it you'll be just as silly as "theshoe23".

Excuse Me? I have Metroid Prime 3 and I love it, absolutely love it. I've nearly beat the game.  Nice incorrect assumption.  By the way isn't calling me silly insulting a member?  Where are the ban cops about that?  Anyways people saying "all this game has going for it hype and graphics" are judging this game before playing it as well.

I think the hype was originally started around when the first CG trailer came out, there was a huge debate on whether or not it was real....then it turned out to be fake...but still...all that talking got the game recongnized

Around the Network

because it caught everyones attention with fancy graphics... which turned out to be fake... then the real trailer came out... and looked just as good.

I have my doubts about Killzone 2 here aswell. Even though I will buy it to earn those home trophies when they come about.

But considering that Phil Harrison is in charge I would expect him to do what he knows is right.

Im optimistic because alot may have happend during those years to perhaps change Guerrillas attitude and management enough to motivate them to prove to the gaming world that they aren't some mediocre game developers. Im sure by now that the gaming community is monitored by many developers for feedback and opinions. I know if I were Guerilla, and I would repeatedly read the same comments about how "killzone sucks!" and "Guerilla Games isn't worth 2 shits" then I would friggin do my best to shut those people up. I don't think Guerrilla wants keep wandering in humilation as game creators.

Plus alot of people here are essentially needlessly drawing out Lair as "huge game that flopped", because it wasn't a huge game. And those that only hyped that shit were those who desperately wanted the PS3 sales to get a miraculous boost over night. Personally when I saw Lair for the first time, I had a pre-emptive bad feeling about it. I dont see Lair as being a worthy example to dismiss the potential of Killzone 2.

Lets see what happens. It can only go two ways: Positive or negative.

 Consoles: Wii & PS3.

well they think it will be different from the first and actually make it better, most of the hype is from the graphics though

I have no idea either. I think it's because of the prerendered trailer they first showed, where they lied to people and said it was ingame. First one was absolute crap, so why this would suddenly be great, I have no idea.

yes thats where all the hype started

Umm, let's see...

1. Killzone 2 has the highest budget of any videogame ever made, exceeding 40 million dollars.

2. Killzone 2 has a development team of over 100 different people.

3. Killzone 2 was played by IGN and they found it quite choice.
