The only patent that Motorola has here is the video encoding patent involving H.264 and Microsoft is willing to pay royalties for it. However here is where the issue lies...

Microsoft is arguing that under FRAND (fair and non discriminatory) terms, Motorola is out of line. And I don't blame them...

i see you post this in N4G and get tons of disagree, why?

The exact same comment is on N4G.... http://n4g.com/news/985042/bloomberg-motorola-mobility-wins-ruling-in-microsoft-xbox-patent-case/com

I guess the disagrees is because siding with Microsoft is bad?

No, its because N4G has a very biased fanbase.

2,339 patents? What? A portfolio of over 17,000 patents? How much money is wasted each year trying to figure out who infringes who with which patents. Never mind bothering judges with this endless back and forth. What a nightmare.

Its called the Patent wars.

Yay!!!

So potentially, Microsoft could have to pay Motorolla 4 billion dollars every year in royalties...nice!

I think that Motorola dug their own hole when admitting that the 4 billion was just "start negotiations", which is basically saying that they are using the numbers they throw just as a leverage and a threat.

But then again, it was probably MS fault who started this head2head dispute with Motorola and now are having a taste of their own medicine.
It's A bit like that time Sony patent trolled LG and had the plan backfiring with patent counter claims from LG almost stopping PS3 shipments to Europe until they both settled the dispute and dropped their claims.

This story will probably end up the same way here. Too bad that companies are wasting time on lawyers and politics instead of actual innovation

Yay!!!

The post above, and below yours proves my point.

Microsoft should buy Motorola. A couple of years ago they were willing to pay an incredible amount for Yahoo and here they could have Motorola with 17,000 patents for about $13-14 billion. Any anti-trust issues might be dealt with by offering to license specific patents at a set rate below what Motorola is already charging.

4 billion a year is bullshit no matter how you look at it
