Kaz has a lot of weight on his shoulders but if anyone can turn around the company it'll be him.

Why? I keep seeing this, feels like Obama all over again.

Obama has done brilliant wonders for the USA. But that aside let me see if i can help clearify the Kaz situation.

Kaz led PlayStation with a strategy that made the division not only profitable again, but also made the division competitive during a generation that they clearly was getting crushed. Microsoft and Nintendo didn't really do anything different with their strategies from the beginning to the middle of the generation. Kaz came in and knocked the doors down. Forcing the PlayStation engineers to work closer with the software guys/gals to make tools that were easier to use and help third parties understand the tech under the hood without having to invest as much as Sony did to make the hardware.

Look at the division from 2005 to 2008 (before Kaz had the top spot in PlayStation), the PS2 was dying, the PSP had no ground to stand on, the PS3 had a terrible launch that was dismantled by a year head start of the 360 and a two day later launch of the Wii. In late 2008 when Kaz was put in charge as THE President and CEO of the division he could make the decisions on the incredibly profitable PSP Go (it did not sell very well, but they made quite a sum of money off of each one that did sell, plus the spark of interest in an all digital gaming handheld), PlayStation Move and the redesigned PS3. The PlayStation 3 is now at a point where had it launched in the same year as the Xbox 360, the PS3 would be leading (the gap recently fell below 2 million units).

Under Kaz's leadership he took a platform that everyone was giving up on and in the same generation of hardware has given it a real shot at finishing in at least 2nd place. Back in 2008 when Metal Gear Solid 4 released and didn't turn the tide right then and there for the system. I remember people saying it wasn't possible for the PS3 to ever be anything against the 360.

So I too believe that Kaz can turn Sony around.

So the same broken record we've been hearing ( and known ) for years. "Sony once dominated in industry x, y and z, now instead company 2 and 3 do". Doesn't really tell us anything we haven't heard 1000's of times already.

A lot of that was going to happen with or without Kaz though, the slim, price drops ect. PSP actually did better in its early years compared to 09 - 11 I believe. PSP Go, Move ect, not really anything to boast about. The gap is likely around 3m not 2m. Just my cluster of thoughts

There really wasn't much leadership between Ken's leave in 2007 to Kaz's promotion in late 2008. The price drops I don't see happening without Kaz's measures to reduce the cost of making the PS3 through the Slim redesign.

PSP Go and Move didn't blow up the charts with amazing numbers, but they have been profitable from day one when they hit the shelves because of the markup on them.

And the gap was just now adjusted to make it just under 2m.

I know it was but those adjustments will have to be redone given recent MS shipments.

I agree. They make way too many models for different products. It confuses the average consumer on what they're getting out of their purchase.

Well I haven't dove into the MS shipments yet, so you might be right. However, do we know Sony's numbers yet?

Hopefully they'll turn this around. I don't want Apple to take their place a few years from now!

Samsung seems more likely to take up Sony's place, if that hasn't happened already.

OT: One of the interesting things mentioned in the OP is the lack of collaboration between Sony's different business. And it is a shame. The PS3 is very popular BluRay player among sites that review BD movies and TVs because it has better picture quality than most BD players. Why has no-one decided to pick up the necesary bits from the PS3 to launch a low-to-mid grade BD player that produces better picture quality than most if not all its competitors?

Or why haven't they launched an app for their consoles, smart TVs and/or smartphones that gives users early acces to singles or trailers from Sony's divisions a couple of weeks before their competitors? Or even give them the chance to rent or buy a digital copy of their last blockbuster earlier or cheaper than the competition?

Too many missed opportunities.

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

sony needs to be origional not copy nintendo, apple, and all other dominating companies thats their real problem they dont differntiate between them and their competition. the reason why they did so well with the ps one was price and spending money to get certain IP's. the ps2 wasnt brought about as a "gaming console" but more of a dvd/gaming console and it was affordable for a dvd player at the time of release. the ps3 was the complet opposite. expensive blue ray player when cheaper ones were on the market. and for a gaming console it was expensive and so were the games. the only reason why teh ps3 is doin a little bit of success is because its the only console besides the 360 that looks decent on a HDTV. when the Wii U releases at 1080 p for the same price and same games but with a more "interesting and different" controller people will drop their ps3's for that console. If you dont already see if ask around like i have and the demographic of ones im asking is 18-38 year olds. If the ps4 is anything like the competitors or just an upgraded ps3 sony will surely be in even more trouble. now as for handhelds go the psp failed horribly and teh DS dominated. now the 3DS price drop coupled with an expensive vita is proving to be a huge downfall to the vita already. graphics dont mean anything when it comes to handhelds what so ever as long the games can be handled by the hardware. which obviously the 3DS isnt skimpy on power what so ever since it needs the power to power the 3D screen. what sony needs to do is over powering certain devices. reduce the amount of devices and stop making their devices like their competitors and they will find success. If not they will be the next RCA anyone remember them? they were the big dogs back in the 70's and 80's
