Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Malstrom equates 3D Mario with poison

Do you want more Super Mario Bros.?

Yes, I am smart. 94 75.81%

No, I am an idiot. 16 12.90%

No, I want Nintendo to fail. 13 10.48%

Total:123

I don't feel like it would be a good idea to make multiple 2D Mario games on a console. More than 2 would be overkill. Having 3D Mario mixes things up and provides a different experience for a different consumer. I personally love 2D and 3D Mario games, and I would be sad if either of them were gone.

Is your point that you would rather the resources that go into 3D Mario games go into other non-Mario projects?

I believe the seeds of apples are poisonous. So.....food?

The point is that Super Mario Bros. spawns other awesome games while 3D Mario spawns virtually nothing.

Is that a good reason to not make a franchise anymore? I don't see Uncharted, God of War, Halo, Metroid, Super Smash Brothers, Zelda, etc. spawning any copy series. In the same light, the only "copy" franchise I can even think of for 2D mario games is the new Rayman game.

Can you be more specific in what you mean?

What does Malstrom do for a living?

I ask because it seems as if he wants to be an analyst and got something right once, which may disqualify him, but he must do something else because no one can live from the revenue of free Word Press posts.

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Mixing your healthy logic with such poison, who is the victor?

Alright, I stopped playing Battlefield and read the article. He makes interesting points, but I still don't see why it's particularly bad to create 3D Mario games. 3D Mario opened the door for so many new 3D platformers to rise - and they did, until platforming games took a nose-dive in sales.

It's definitely important to have 2D games like Mario create a market where other 2D games can thrive, but I don't see why Nintendo can't do both. They made a 2D Mario game and 2 3D Mario games on the Wii just fine. Are you trying to argue that instead of investing time into both series, Nintendo should *only* make 2D Mario games and use the 3D Mario game resources for other non-Mario projects?

Also, while he says that 2D Mario makes it possible for other 2D Games to sell, why did Rayman Origins, which was widely critically successful in reviews, completely tank in sales comparatively? Mario didn't make a good market for Rayman, apparently... Maybe these types of games don't rely on Mario as much as Malstrom thinks they do.

I Just finished reading his last post. Its brilliant!!!
Malstrom is something else!!
I learn a lot from the man.

After I finished reading it, I was trying to understand why Nintendo waste so much resources on 3D mario. Instead, they should assign a talented studio like Retro to develop something new. Maybe we could have something as big as Goldeneye was for the N64. Who knows?

This is where he totally lost me. The man is domed:

"It is not just that Nintendo makes 3d Mario and their finances decline while making 2d Mario and their finances increase. Gaming, as a medium, grows with 2d Mario. Gaming, as a medium, declines with 3d Mario.

Miyamoto appears in this post to say, “But if we combine 2d Mario and 3d Mario, we can compromise and everyone wins.”

When food and poison compromises, which is the victor? I don’t see 3d Land selling 3DS systems, inspiring more games like it, or filling up Nintendo’s coffers with money. What will it take to drop the sick, sick 3d obsession?"

A few weeks before the release of Rayman Origins he had post up that outlined the reasons why it wouldn't sell. Thats how brilliant the man is.

What do you mean 3D Mario spawns virtually nothing!

Super Mario 64 revolutionized 3D gaming. It's literally is one of the most influential videos games ever created. It spawned a ton of great games such as.

1. Banjo and Kazooie, Banjo Tooie

2. Donkey Kong 64

3. Ocarina of Time

4. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark

5. Jet Force Gemini and Conkur's bad fur day

You can't honeslty tell me that all these games are bad.

All 3D gaming owes gratitude to Mario 64.

Just like Super Mario Bros layed the foundation of how to make a video game, Mario 64 layed the foundation on how to make a 3D game. While it's true none of the newer 3D Mario games were as influential as Mario 64, neither are the newest 2d Mario games. In fact I would say that 3D Mario's are more innovative and creative. NSMB and NSBMW are great games that are based mostly off nostalgia and borrow most of thier ideas from the past games.
