Its a 85-90 for me personally, very good but its not perfect..Had quite the same feeling after playing it to Alan Wake. M$ definitely need to invest more on these niche core titles.

MS made no investment in The Witcher 2 as far as I know

I know, I was saying in general MS should take a look at witcher 2, alan wake and other console exclusives and draw out the positives and the potentials for these titles. Clearly they are focussing on the casual path.
I just got The Witcher 1 Enhanced Directors Cut from gog.com for £3.20, should I play that before picking up 2 or does it not make much difference?

well you will get some references, and with an imported save a few decisions in the first game will make some small changes in how certain conversations play out. Other than that it's just some bonus money and some starting items.
The Witcher 1 is a good game if you can get past it's many many flaws... Performance is crap even on many powerful systems due to the fact it only uses 1 CPU thread, loading screens are long and everywhere, combat is tedious, fetch quests are endless etc
