Is it due to the decisions of their respective game companies?

or is it decided by Sony due to some ESRB ratings legality?

I've tried searching for info regarding this issue over the web but to no avail. Is Sony planning to change this in a future PSN patch?

i don't think the DLC is region locked per se, but rather locked to the local language version of the games in that particular region.

as for online play, possible lag may be a reason to keep the connections local

Online: It's up to devs. In killzone2 i was able to join games from other regions just fine.
DLC: I think what Porcupine_l said makes a lot of sense. I don't really know when it comes to that one.

I don't mind not being able to download DLC, but I can't play online due to my region being set to Asia.

WKC II only allows US and EU players. Sure I can use my alternate US account but that means no trophies and friend list usage for me.

I dont have WK2 but go online to see if they took down the Asian servier, which is highly unlikely. Check if your game was really new and check if your redeem codes got expired and if thats the case you can call Sony.

I'm sure you must be referring to WKC1.

Because WKC1 wasn't region locked you see. I could play WKC1 online on their geonet but not with WKC2 because my PSN account region is Asia(R3) instead of north america(R1).
