Forums - Gaming Discussion - Your top 5 games of all time and why?

as many good games as there are out there I gotta say nothing beat final fantasy 7,8,9,10,12 when the each came out easily the best games.

Around the Network

1. Alpha Centauri

"Civ in Space" you used laser guns and planet-busters instead of horses and wimpy nuclear bombs. Unit customization was fantastic, and the future techs really felt like you were exploring a new frontier, rather than comparing your progress to history.

Favorite moment(s): sweeping through that insufferable Miriam's vast expanse of bases (she always has too many) and their stupid pun names.

2. Sim City 4

What a city-builder should be. Deep, customizable, it became for many players, myself included, a hobby, and art project.

Favorite moment: watching, after careful planning and time spent cultivating a region, as the first real skyscraper grows and opens, crowning the fledgling skyline.

3. Final Fantasy 6

One of the first games to really embrace story-telling and character development. It really drew me in and made me believe the world and it's inhabitants. Plus a fantastic magic system that had you searching for magicite and swapping out stone to learn spells and boost stats. Very non-linear second half was brilliantly done.

Favorite moment: The opera scene. Gotta love that music.

4. Warcraft 3

I've always both enjoyed and sucked at RTS games, but Warcraft 3's heroes and small armies were easier for me to master and micro-manage. Playing online was great fun with the ladder system.

Favorite moment: Rexxar's campaign. More RPG than RTS but the founding of Orgrimmar was fun and exciting.
Favorite RTS moment: In an online game, the other player laughed at me and called me a noob when I challenged his group of chimeras with a handful of necromancers. Those chimeras never had a chance.

5. Timesplitters: Future Perfect

I've never been a fan of FPS games, but there was something different about Timesplitters. It's fun, time-traveling story never left me bored with the same old guns and enemies. But where it really shines is it's multiplayer. 4-player split screen with AI bots, the action was more frenetic and engaging than any other FPS of it's time, without the nuisances involved with online play. (nuisances mostly being idiotic players) The assault mode is epic, capture the flag great fun too. The mapmaker, though limited, was brilliant, and added so many possibilities. I spent hours upon hours making maps, still do from time to time.

Favorite moment: every time I sit down to play multiplayer.

I'll name some sure;

1) The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
-Best moment being the WHOLE game

2) Final Fantasy 9
-Best moment being, overall love story

3) Chrono Trigger
-Best moment being, fighting a monster that controls time.

1. Zelda Wind Waker. This game is just fantastic, the visuals, the soundtrack, the locations, the gameplay, I love it all. My favourite moment: when Link draws the master sword.

2. Final Fantasy VI. This has IMO the best story of any game and the best villain too. Soundtrack is fantastic too, as well as the 16-bit graphical style. My favourite moment: the final boss and secondly the infamous opera scene.

3. Super Mario Galaxy 2. This games improved upon the original in every way and is my favourite platformer ever made. My favourite moment: finally beating the grandmeister galaxy with only 1 health and getting the final star.

4. Super Smash Bros Brawl. Pretty much everything I want in a game, I've put over 300 hours into it and have loved every second of it. My favourite moment: very hard to say, but I would say getting the game after a long wait of hype and the lengthy localisation process.

5. Metal Gear Solid. I loved this game all the way from start to finish, it is a testament to its quality that I wanted to replay it the moment I first finished it. My favourite moment: Psycho Mantis battle.

You want me to pick only 5 games? Which should be the best? *head explodes*

* Pikmin 2
Both Pikmins are great. I picked the second, because it added some more options, but both are great. The Pikmins are cute, the surroundings are a funny mix of our normal surroundings with the Pikmins and other creatures added. And it plays nice.

* Starcraft
Greatest LAN-parties ever!

* Resident Evil: Revelations
I had a hard time to decide between RE 1 and Revelations. But I think in the end the great online-mode gives the newer game a slight advantage. But also RE 1 is a great game, that fine horror.

* Battle for Wesnoth
Great strategy-game. It has a mass of content, multiple options, online, and much more. And it's free. Try it: http://wesnoth.org/

 * Kid Icarus: Uprising
Fun, fun, fun, fun. The dialogs are hilarious, the gameplay is full of action.

* Day of the Tentacle
Yeah, great humor, nice riddles and great LucasArts-quality. I had a hard time to choose my favorite LucasArts-game. Monkey Island 1 is on the same level, so I should name that too.

Ouch, already six, and I have much more great games to mention. I should stop now.

This is just too hard to answer for me...I'll cheat

1) Super mario bros/Contra: My first games and back in days i played the hell out of them.
2) Jade Empire/Mass Effect: Jade was probably my favourite game on original xbox and just Mass Effect is super fun.
3) Uncharted trilogy: I just love it. I don't want to explain it. It would just not live upto how must i enjoy it.
4) Assassin's Creed series: It is just such an amazing concept. I get to see how people lived, acted, the architecture. This is one of the best immersion. Florence and Venice in AC2. Oh how i like it.
5) Tim Schafer games: How wonderfully imaginative and mixed with subtle humour.

There are just lots more but i'll limit it here.

1. Sid Meier's Civilization
First game in the best game franchise ever / Fav moments: "Found New City."

2. The Secret of Monkey Island
Funniest adventure game ever / Fav moment: "You fight like a dairy farmer."

3. Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
Best sequel ever / Fav moment: "Spit Away!"

4. Dune II: Battle for Arrakis
First (PC) RTS ever / Fav moments: "Construction complete."

5. Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle
Funniest time travel game ever / Fav moment: "There's a little teeny tiny sweater in there."

1) Journey: This may be a short game but it doesn't undermine the fact that vast amounts of imagination have gone into making this game a classic. Truly the greatest impact I've had from a game
2) Metroid Prime: Retro studios pulled off a great feat with this game. Not only is visually fantastic today (excluding Samus Aran's features, they were in fact poor) but the exploration and combat system would still hold a mark today.
3) Uncharted 2: Among Thieves: This made a very big impact on me throughout gameplay as I did not expect as much as I got. The campaign was longer than anticipated, the storyline was very compelling, and the environments were breathtaking. Not only that but there was a multiplayer as well.
4) Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception: This was a very enjoyable game but couldn't quite live up to the expectations of it's predecessor. The storyline was still compelling and the environments were breathtaking but that great magic from impact was missing. The multiplayer has mainly improved over it's predecessor with some very intriguing maps heading it's way. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception does however feature my favourite part in the franchise, which is the Dockyard and Cruise-Ship sections of the game.
5) Super Mario Galaxy 2: The predecessor to this game left a high amount of milestones to beat and Super Mario Galaxy 2 achieved those. The galaxies were very varied, the power-ups added to overall enjoyment, the boss battles never failed to impress and top it all off Yoshi was an integral part of the game.
