January 11, 2008 - Nintendo Australia has announced that it’s secured sponsorship of the 2008 Australian Open as the Official Gaming Console supplier, which will the company present outside Vodafone arena with a Nintendo stand devoted to Wii Sports, and a Lounge at the Trade Area showing off Sight Training.

Every day of the Australian Open, which runs from January 14 to 27, visitors will be able to compete in the Wii Championships at the Nintendo stand, and entrants will need to hold the court for as long as they can to become the daily champion. Each of those will take home a Wii console, and the two highest ranking daily champions will be invited back to compete in the Final on January 27.

The Final will be played out on the big screen in Garden Square, with the grand champion winning tickets to the Men’s Final and going head-to-head with Mark Philippoussis in a Wii Sports tennis play-off. Philippoussis will also appear at the Nintendo stand on Tuesday, January 15 at 11:00am.

“Both the Wii Championships and Nintendo Sight Training Lounge at the Australian Open, will showcase the diversity and broad appeal of Nintendo’s products,” said Rose Lappin, the Managing Director of Nintendo Australia. “We have games for everyone. We know Mark Philippoussis is a fan of Wii, and there will be a few Wii fans lining up to take him on.”
