Still prison is a bit harsh.

Both the UK and USA have freedom of speech, as long as you don't offend anyone and what you say falls within the limits of the powers that be who make the rules.

Wrong.

He was prosectuted for "inciting racial hatred", this is a crime in the UK since a good 5 years or so. Basically gives a remit to prosecute any racist behaviour.

Too right as well.

Racists should be burnt alive and their dead bodies fucked up the arse by every colour and creed living on this planet. If it wasn't for racism millions of people would be alive today who aren't.

There's passive racism which isn't a big deal where ignorant people don't realise their comments are having an overall negative effect and encouraging active rasists to continue doing so. This guy was not doing that, this wasn't some illinformed "joke" referencing a certain race as a certain animal for example (disgusting but not malicious). He was talking like an evil piece of shit and knew full well what he was saying.

Yes but his crime was 'inciting racial hatred', that wasn't a racist tweet.

Have you even read these tweets?

Yes. I'm saying that his threatening tweet wasn't racist, he wasn't prosecuted for his threats. He was prosecuted for his racism, I disagree with the idea that a person can be sent to jail for making racist comments.

there are laws like this in canada. our intelligence agency a couple years back (maybe still doing it for all i know) were trolling racist websites looking for canadians saying things that violate our laws.

i think something like these instances certainly goes against the spirit of the laws. and a sentence like was handed out to this individual just seems so bizarre especially when you consider the overpopulation of prisons and that there is a non-violent offense.

While I'm sure his comments are horrible as is racism in general... GOD BLESS AMERICA and its Freedom of ALL speech. (well, at least for now)

That's a joke right?

Which part?

1) racism is bad

2) US has freedom of speech

3) at least for now

You should go to jail

This. Freedom of speech, not freedom to the worst network of websites on Earth.

He wasn't sent to jail for making racist comments.

He went to jail because the judge decided it was an appropriate punishment for the crime he pleaded guilty to.

The judge seems more annoyed that the kid wasn't praying for Muamba like the rest of the world was.

I myself was not commenting on whether i think this guy was being racist or not, or indeed whether he should have gone to prison.

My comment was more to do with the gradual erosion of everyones freedom of speech unless an opinion fits in with what is seen as 'normality'.

No, the crime is inciting racial hatred.

He should have pled not guilty then the CPS would have had to prove that someone else started to hate black people because of his comments. He didn't so the judge did what all the grief hunters wanted him to do.

Personally, I'd have ordered him to incite racial love for 56 days.
