Forums - Music Discussion - Favorite epic songs

I was listening to Elton John’s Funeral for a FriendLove lies bleeding and was thinking about my favorite epic some might say indulgent songs. Late 60’s and the 70’s were full of them

So I would love to see others favorite epic songs here are some of my favorites:

The before  mentioned Elton John song starts out kind of arty in the vein of early Genesis then has an awesome change of pace into a rocker. Great song

Of course some zeppelin- When the levee Breaks and Kashmir

Green grass and high tides by The Outlaws (A bit indulgent)

And a great 60’s tune “Time has come today” By the Chambers Bros

There are more but those come to mind

Man I've never heard summertime by them

hunting on youtube

Zappa has a few epics but in the jazz rock fusion variety, great songs like "Big Swifty" love that tune

"The Town Meeting Song" by The Polyphonic Spree immediately popped into my head when I saw this thread.

It's one of the most ridiculous songs I've ever heard, but I love it. Especially when you get to 6:17.

When I think of "epic" music I tend to think of most classical music that I like, because it's simply much longer so it has a "story arch" feel to it so to speak. You know it just has enough room to give definition to different parts of the song. You just can't get that with these short 3 minute songs of today. I have som favs from a few genres tho:

Rhapsody in Blue - George Gershwin
40th Symphony K 550 - Mozart
3rd Symphony 1rst Movement - Beethoven
Grand Polonaise Brilliante #1 - Chopin
Lateralus - Tool
Paranoid Android - Radiohead
Were in this Together - Nine Inch Nails

All those songs are at least 7 minutes, and it shows because each part gets there time to shine and you can point to distinct sections in the song. Most artists have a few epic songs up their sleeves despite the era of music we live in today.

that song  could define epic

I can;t forget Achilles Last Stand by zeppelin
We listened to that song so much in the late 70's it could be considered vinyl abuse

Oh, now I remember another one that is so much epic that the band that wrote it gave up the music:

Hurt - Johnny Clash
