Great game with some genious level design. And like most Mario games, perfect difficulty.

Just like NSMB, I finished it and every now and then I go back to do a level or two again. I'll probably do that for a long time.

More than 36 hours in and still loving it. Fantastic game.
3D world + 2D features + SMB3 feeling = epic win.

I enjoyed 3D Land quite a bit. I really admire how it combined the best of both 2D and 3D Mario games into one great game. To me, 3D Mario games are a great experience, but 2D games are always more fun to play. This game fits right in between providing a great experience and still being a lot of fun. That being said, it isn't the longest game ever unless you go for 100%. I beat the game with 4 stars within two weeks, but still need to get all the gold flagpoles...

The game play is similar to 2D Mario games where you try to reach the end of a level while collecting star coins along the way, only this time you move along in a 3D space, while playing the game in 3D. In my opinion the 3D really does make a difference and looks great. You can especially see the difference when you are in those special 3D rooms because if the 3D is off it looks like the blocks are connected, while they are apart with 3D on. The music is great as well. The game itself is pretty easy until you get to world 8 of the "special" worlds, and even then only the last few levels are hard. Of course, for first time players I'm sure it will get tougher much earlier on. We have to remember that playing every Mario game will make them all seem easy to us. lol

As for how things will play out in the future... I'm sure Nintendo will continue to make 2D and 3D Mario games, but now they will make games like this that are a combination of the two as well. Each of the 3 provide a different experience, but they are all great games. Looking forward to the 2D game for the 3DS this year! Hopefully New Super Mario World.

Nintendo still doomed?

I loved it. After accomplishing everything the game has to offer, I feel that this is the right idea for 3D Mario on a handheld. If they just expand on this game's ideas for its inevitable sequel I think they can craft a true masterpiece.

3D Land style for handhelds, Galaxy style for consoles, and 2D Mario games for both.

I thought it was fantastic. The level design was great, the music memorable and above all it was fun. I also found it quite challenging but maybe that's just me. I hope there is a Super Mario 3D Land 2 some day.

It feels like its only 3D Mario game designed to speed run.

Thats why its top 3 Mario imo. Still haven't completely 100% it though.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Admittedly, you can quadruple the time if you can play the Special Worlds, but that's just not the same.

I don't understand this complaint. My view is that, despite many of the SW levels being recycled completely (except for the addition of cosmic mario), what there was in addition, in the first half and early second half of these stages, turned the game into a 10/10.

I get the grievances with difficulty, but id like to see other platformers which offer this much variation and length (without the notacable faked difficulty alterations) that exceeded Land's total game time, ESPECIALLY on a handheld.

I think all levels were excellent in design, and you were never bored during your play-through. However, I didn't need more than two days to 100% it, and the replay value is pretty much gone once you've done that in my opinion.

Would easily have been a 9,5/10 if it was replay-able, but it will have to settle for 8,5.

Well, to my surprise the game to me is incredibly boring.
At first it was really easy, then it becomes more challenging but the fact you cannot explore the levels to get stars (like Galaxy) it makes me want to rush through the levels.
I know you have star medals, but still is not really rewarding aside for a few things.

This is of course my opinion and I don't want to say the game is bad, I know is great and all it's just boring to me. Maybe because I was expecting something more like Galaxy/64

It's called Super Mario 3D Land, it will be like the Land series, duh.

Yeah and the Land series were never 3D, so as the series were redesigned, I hoped It would be more like Galaxy/64 in terms of open-worldness and well, being fun.
