I dont really get the doom calling. If a console dont selling as much as predictet that doesnt automatically mean that it is doomed.

The PS3 was once called doom and look at it now. its the best selling home consoel every week.
Two years ago the psp was called dead and now it survived for another two years and became the best selling handheld for most weeks in japan.

Sure the PS Vita dont sell to well right now, but in the end i think it will be a huge success.
There are so many factors that will increase sales.

-price cut
-E3
-gamescom
-tokio game show
-captivate
-Black friday deals
-Christmas boost
-Games like Persona 4 ect will also boost sales.

So calling a console/handheld doomed without beeing a year on sale is just stupid thinking in my opinion.
But seroiusly what do people expekt from the vita. You cant sell a console with ports and some mini games.
The only good title at start was Uncharted Golden Abyss. If this game havent release at start than the Vita would be in really bad shape.

The same problem will Nintendo have with the Wii U. Why should i buy a Wii U if i only get some ports like Batman Arkham City, Ninja Gaiden 3 and so on. Why should i buy a Wii U if i get Assassins creed 3 on my pS3 as well.

In the end i also think the Wii u will be fine because of games like Super Marion and co. But it also can end like the GameCube. The Game Cube also has Super mario, Zelda, Mario Kart,Mario Party, Pikmin and only managed to sell 20 M. It depends if the 3rd Party support the maschine in a good way. Will a company willing to spend more money in the Wii U version or will a company just port a PS3 X Box 360 game to the Wiiu. All Factors that matters.

So much wrong with your post...

a. The Wii success doesn't mean it will carry over to the Wii U. Just look at what happened between the PS2 and PS3 transition.
b. No, they will "gravitate" towards the cheaper powerful consoles such as a PS3 or Xbox 360. 

In the end it all comes down to marketing and word of mouth. People won't buy a Wii U if they don't know about it. People won't buy a Wii U if they can buy the still new Kinect for Xbox 360 which is cheaper.

But the PS3 isn't a huge success in Japan....it is successful but the Wii sold better.

I think Sony really needs to do something to get people buying a Vita instead of a 3DS. But maybe Sony isn't aiming to be the market leader...who knows what their plans are.
