It is not scary. You can avoid all of the potential problems with the community by simply ignoring it and watching the show anyway. You don't have to be a brony to like the show. But... there is some cool stuff that people have made. I'm tellin' ya, if you like fighting games, My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic looks like a ton of fun.

They have a fighting game for it? xD Why is it so appealing? It's just ponies!

This is pretty old footage at this point, and there is newer stuff out there, but watch this and see what you think of it. Everything in it is fan made. The music included.

As for why it is so appealing... The show is because it's just so happy and adorable. And sometimes, I need to smile. It is hard not to smile at such a cute show. But there's also plenty of little things in there to make you chuckle (or laugh pretty hard). It looks great, it sounds great, it's fun to watch, and it makes my day. And there is so much in the community that is really cool, like Fighting is Magic. Some of it is weird and creepy, but the vast majority of it is not, and there is a surprising amount of it that is pretty good to really good quality.
