Lol. That movie looked like an absolute turd to me and it seems like the critics agree...but then again, I like the sherlock holmes movies and they scored as poorly as this movie.

Watched it this weekend and was a solid Film, I enjoyed it and so did my boy. Only available in 3D in my cinema which is well annoying so had to take in the 3D. Fortunately I did not notice any over the top 3D in your face moments.

Anyway what was more interesting is how some other films are really starting to look good. Battleship that is now looking awesome, MIB3 thats looking awesome, Avengers thats looking awesome and Wrath of the Titans is even looking good. Looks like I have few a trips to the Cinema to come over the next few months.

You may be right.  i haven't read the book in a long long time.  i need to go back to the book and read it.  The movie seemed very similar to what I remembered from the book.  Only main difference is the princess.  For some reason, I pictured her with less clothes.

I don't think this movie was dumbed down.  for an action film, it did have character development, it had humor, romance, action, I enjoyed willem Dafoe's character, and his daughter.  The dog was funny. and the twist at the end was very Sherlock Holmes like.  

i also really liked john carter, hope more movies are made from this ip.
since percy jackson is getting a sequel , this movie stands a chance to get one as well.

And then you  have to remember that Blockbuster basicly work with a dollar spend and three back concept. What the hell was Disney Studios thinking...?

Actually, foreign tastes are dumbed down. Crummy 3D action movies do boffo overseas.

Carter bombed in the US because there are about 30 other movies that come out that are similar, but actually have a coherent storyline in regards to advertising.

No one in the US knew what "John Carter from Mars" was. I doubt anyone OS did, either, but saw the flashy lights and bought into it.

I enjoyed it very much, it wasn't the best movie ever made but it was a perfect "popcorn" movie

The absolute best thing about the movie was the "dog"... he was freaking hilarious :D

Thank God my kids have grown out of that stage.

My 14 yr old loved John Carter.

My younger one had to ask few questions during the movie - so be ready to for that.

the movie was not that good, the best part about the movie was the dog. The dog was straight up awesome!

It was based off an old novel which sci-fi movies have drawn upon for inspiration for decades. This left John Carter feeling unoriginal when in fact its source material is as original as the genre can get, the film was just 100 years too late. It had just enough cheesy Disney charm to carry it, but some of the actors' performances were so flat and forced that I just wished it would end earlier at times. I found myself caring more about the space dog as opposed to Carter and the princess who fell straight out of a Vogue magazine.

Also for a film that cost 250million you'd think the special effects and CGI animations would be far more polished. Some of the jumping and action sequences saw the palm of my hand be collected by my forehead.

Still it might seem I'm heavily criticizing it, but overall it was an enjoyable experience. Arguably around 2.5 or 3 stars I'd put it at. Also need to point out, don't take really young children to see it, my god there was shitloads of blue blood and an amputation and decapitation sequence. Reminded me of older videogames where the parental lock would change the blood from red to green or blue.
