Forums - Gaming Discussion - New iPad and PS Vita specs

This NOT a iPad gaming vs Vita gaming or which is better for games comparison. I am showing the comparison as further support for my argument on why Vita should have been a smarthone.

Please read the text below the table for better understanding.

  PSVita New iPad
CPU ARM9 Quad Core
800Mhz to 1.2Ghz
ARM 9 Dual Core
800MHz to 1Ghz
GPU PowerVR SGX543MP4+
Quad-Core
Quad-Core chip… probably same or better than Vita's GPU, but actual spec isn't released yet. iPad 2 was the PowerVR SGX543MP2.
Memory 512 MB RAM, 128 MB VRAM 1GB RAM… probably shared
Resolution 5" 960 × 544 qHD @ 220 ppi 9.1" 2048 x 1536 @ 264 ppi
Cameras Front and Back 0.3MP (not HD) Front VGA and Back 5MP HD
Storage 16GB PSVita Card ($60) 16GB
Connectivity Wifi, Bluetooth, 3G to locked carriers (no multiplayer gaming) Wifi, Bluetooth, 4G to almost any carrier and full online everthing.
Other Benefits Real gaming controls, Back touch panel, Sony 1st party games, ?? Full tablet/computer with superb apps and really anything including games. (obviously worse controls)
Price (MSRP) Wifi $310 and 3G $360  Wifi $500 and 4G $630
  *4GB card is only $20

Take a real good look at those differences. The new iPad is releasing a mere couple of months after Sony's premier handheld and its pretty much at par with every spec if not better in some areas. Overall the only real difference in relation to gaming is iPad's lack of controls and its $200 higher price tag. However, given its far wider mass appeal and capabilities, people will spend the money on it FAR more than they will on the Vita.

Now, taking this into consideration. My THREAD ON VITA SHOULD BE A SMARTPHONE makes a lot more sense doesn't it?

Think about it. Vita with FULL smartphone/tablet capabilites also running Android with its apps AND the even better pricing due to carrier contracts or same price off contract... it would be flying off shelves right now and selling for a profit without any accessories. Hell, they could have built in 16GB of storage and used regular SD cards for expansion as security could be handled on the units storage.

Sony fucked up and only the 3DS will be long-term success this time around due to far cheaper price and Nintendo software.

Couple of problems here.

#1.) Your "Connectivity" section makes it appear as though Vita can not do online gaming while iPad can.

#2.) You can't just add a $60 memory to the price, especially when it isn't required to have that amount of space since the games can be purchased at retail.

#3.) Your price comparisons are made unfair. Like mentioned with the memory cards, you don't need more than 8GB and since the 3G version still comes with a 8GB packed in the price differences are not $200 higher, but rather $220-$230 higher for a WiFi model and $330 higher for a mobile broadband enabled device.

#4.) The main difference is not just controls, but also a lack of high quality software.

#5.) Completely different markets. People who look at Vita and think $250 is too much for playing games isn't thinking a $630 iPad is perfect priced for playing games.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Also stop with the Vita phone and thinking that it would be a guaranteed success and/or a smart move. If the Vita phone doesn't take off and become a high selling phone device (Not to mention it is going to get these ridiculous yearly upgrades), expect the big game makers (IE: Sega, Epic, Capcom, etc...) to leave the Vita phone behind with no dedicated Vita titles and shift those resources instead to iDevice, Android and/or 3DS game development.

What you are proposing is, in my opinion, a much more risky move than taking a chance with the Vita as it is now. Look at Xperia Play to see just how much the market cares for dedicated gaming phones.

I honestly don't remember the last time Sony even mentioned it's name.

Without a good control scheme and without a decent game library it still cannot be considered a proper competitor to a dedicated gaming device.

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

iPad, is not a gaming device. People don't want a gaming phone all in one device. I own a vita an iPhone and an iPad 2. I only play games on one. One never gets used. Can you guess witch one it is? iPad is more of an oh wow device, people want it and their not sure why. I bought mine thinking it would be nice to have, but it isn't. If you own an iPhone you already have an iPad. So it's pointless. My vita is slowly taking over, a few more apps and I'll sell every apple device I have, go back to a 15 dollar a month phone and be happy. Biggest troll tread I've read in awhile. Your views are skewed.

Really, you never use it? I play my 3ds a lot, but I was still using my iPad 1 all the time up until I sold it last month. I've been missing having it around the past 2 weeks. I'm glad the new one was announced and I just ordered a wifi iPad to replace it. My girlfriend plays her 3ds/PSP a lot as well, but still uses her iPad the most.

I'm telling you, a combination of the two, would make it undesirable for either market(IMO) because of technical or physical limitations. You cannot optimize a device to be the ultimate gaming handheld and a competitive smart phone at the same time. It is impossible. Just like you can't take a high end gaming PC and fuse it with an Ipad, and expect the portability and affordablity of the Ipad and the power and functionality of a high end gaming console to hold true. It might all make perfect sense in your head and in theory but when it comes down to actually making the physical product, there will have to be many compromises that have to be made and it will hurt the experience on both ends. Also they cannot sell the Vita at a loss and give it the complete open Android market. Publishers would then just create mobile games on the android market that takes advantage of the controls and avoids the licensing fees that Sony charges for selling Vita games. That means Sony would no longer be able to sell the Vita at a loss and would probably have to be $200 to $300 more, on top of the greater cost of making it a smart phone.

You say price is not an issue, but it is an issue. You say size is not an issue, but it is. You say battery life is not an issue, but it is as well. You keep saying people will adapt, but you yourself is unwilling to adapt and carry two devices. That is very telling of what people would do if they had to make all these sacrifices to have a Vita Phone the way you want it.

The only way I can remotely agree that Sony couldn't pull this off in a more successful manner than Vita will be is form factor.

Battery would not be a change from any usage now on either device. Price would be less for the greater majority of purchasers, so I don't see why this is even a contentious point.

Form factor is the only one I've ever been a little uneasy about. But, with that I look at the many slider style phones now that are successful. Hell, the Motorola Droid has been on of the most popular on Verizon as has been many others on other carriers, as popular as candybar style, no, but popular none-the-less. The 3DS and DS are very popular and I think even more desireable due to the clam shell design... granted slider and clam shell are not the same thing. I do think there is a valid concern that a fatter slider phone would push people off as well as not people prefering the current Vita form over a slider form. However, I also thought about the initial and ongoing reaction to PSPGo when it came out. Only thing I ever heard as a  complaint was the software, not form factor. So in the end I think that while it may push off some, the fact of it being your smartphone would attract far more.

Yes, I'm sure that 50+ million people have regretted their iPad purchase. I own one. Several friends own one. We all use ours non-stop for browsing, gaming, reading, and at times, actual work.

Tens of millions of people don't buy something just because it looks cool. I'm afraid that your view is the one that is skewed here.

I would like to see how the New IPad specs match up against the IPad 2 specs. Is it worth upgrading from IPad 2 to the New IPad or just wait?

I'm going to wait. The only thing that really appeals to me is the high resolution display because I do a lot of comic book reading on the iPad. That extra resolution would be nice.
