I hope people take this into account when deciding to purchase his game. I would never give my money to someone who puts down someones work. The Japanese Dev probably put a lot of effort into it. Jerk!

But FEZ shapes to be an awesome game and because of that no one will give a shit about what happened at GDC.

Yeah, I know. people like you. I'd rather not give my money to someone who bashes other peoples work. Sure it's not the first time someone thinks a game is shitty, but he clearly showed disrespect by putting him on blast in front of other people. I mean come on, REALLY?? He couldnt have just waited till later that day to tweet about it? The guy felt so disrespected that he left. Even you have to admit it was bogus. Respect is very important to the Japanaese people.

man and that to someone from japan straight in his face? they are always so respectful to you if you talk with someone from japan and this guy wasn't able to say him this a little bit more respectful? what a prick!
i believe he's a huge nerd who doesn't understand the difference between "those games suck" on the internet or straight in the face to someone in real life exactly from there living exactly from this.

i think as well that japanese games aren't as good as they were 10 years ago but i think the same about most western games nowadays compared to their predecessor. sure new technique helps to make better graphics and blabla but if it comes to simplification nowadays even in games for "core" gamers i could cry.

Is there any need for a moral analysis? Who gives a fuck from that perspective. This is a gaming site and I hardly think the developer needed to see a councillor after receiving his answer - which he asked for. Regardless or rights and wrongs, Fish was speaking the truth as he saw it, and you know what, as I just said, it's that "respect" culture that causes so many problems for them in modern times. Their economy is down the toilet, in part thanks to it.

I've met plenty of Japanese people, and on a personal level they aren't especially respectful except in business. They do have a certain charm and restrained aura about them but they aren't stupid and can quite easily stand up for themselves.

Your post is simply a stereotype painting the picture of Japanese people as unable to cope with Western peopleideascritisism style. Sorry but that is more insulting and ignorant than anything.

Damn it why im i reading this at 7:30 in the morning

Well that's a huge generalisation, but as I don't have the entire convo and context I'm going to reserve judgement. I will say that the Japanese industry has suffered somewhat this generation. I think it's down to the extra competition from Western and PC devs entering the console space. Japanese developers have been forced into introducing with new ideas to compete, but unfortunately sometimes those ideas have the opposite effect; alienating traditional fans whilst not bringing in new audiences.

It doesn't help that a lot of PC based tech (Unreal engine, Cryengine, Source) that Western developers are familiar with but Eastern developer struggle with, have become established console development tools this gen.

So wait a second? Nintendo alone puts out more AAA games in the same amount of time then EA, A/B, Ubi, T2 combined, and then we have Sony japan, Capcom, N/B, Konami, Atlus etc. I know that saleswise its not the dominant force what it used to be, but do you know why? because they know that the future of gaming is portable, and they actually knew this waaaay before the Iphone started the mass gaming craze.

And did anyone notice that his creation loooks pretty much like Super Paper Mario and Ecochrome ducttaped together? Im not buying this garbage...

I'm sorry that Japan is the only gaming industry that provides some variety in games and gives you new and unexpected things. If not being another generic FPS/TPS clone makes a game suck, then I'll gladly play bad games for the rest of my life.

GO JAPAN!!!!

This guy needs to be hauled to Japan and locked in a pillory. Every Eastern game developer can throw shit at him, and women and children can point and laugh. That would be fair.

It's hard to argue with him overall, that Japanese industry has taken a huge hit in my opinion. The sales aren't there, the praise isn't there, but the nostalgia is as strong as ever. It's unfortunate that Nintendo is really the only company to have a grasp on quality games and keep in line with consistency. I think he's being blunt because he feels like he has to, if you feel like the games suck overall, then you should say it.

what a rash, over generalising and ignorant statement from someone that should know better really, as a developer he knows what work goes into making a game to throw a statement around like this he just comes across as arrogant.

I personally think the quality of american games is slipping and turning into uninspiring rehashes of previous glories but theres still quite a few gems of pure quality there, the same applies to Japan the quality isn't what it used to be but the great games are there (some quite possibly the best games of the generation) it isn't just Japans games that arn't up to scratch the general games industry at the moment is decending a steady slope and it's getting harder to find the real quality amongst the bloated review systems and publisher pandering that exists now. Originality seems to be frowned upon and anything that doesn't tick the "basics" in terms of what reviewers expect is punishing the industry.

anyway on topic hope this guy doesn't get offered the oppertunity to attend this kind of conference again he's an embarressment to the industry

I could argue all day, it's his opinion fine but to bluntly throw that out there isn't constructive, Japan has had a decline in it's software sales but the quality is still there if you want to find it. If he feels so strongly about all this and i would say he does with a statement like that then he should explain himself and offer advice to where he thinks they've gone wrong not just tell them there crap
