Forums - PC Discussion - Will PC gaming ever become bigger then console?

PC gaming is almost always bigger than the best selling console taken singularly, although it's normally smaller than the whole console market, except when the slowest cyclic periods of the latter don't coincide with the slowest PC ones.
About price for a gaming PC, it constantly gets lower, the overprice to make a work one become a gaming one is getting lower too, avoiding highest end GPUs it's already cheaper than most consoles, and after the first purchase a PC can be periodically updated for a fraction of its initial price.
About expansion of PC and competition from tablets and phones: China, India and other rapidly developing countries could make PC market even huger than now, and Android could end up unifying PC market with the mobile one.

If you count facebook games and web-based games it may in terms of revenue.

Probably not for bigger budget games though.

Given that the fastest growing market (China) are currently dominated by some form of PC gaming it could happen, as long is you include web bassed gaming portals as PC gaming anyway. China's online gaming market (MMO, F2P and web) grew from $1.6 billion in 2007 to $3 billion in 2010 ($USD). It also depends if you count tablets as PCs I guess as that is a rapidly increasing market and with Windows 8 being designed to run on tablets and desktops it is pretty easy to argue that they are infact PCs.

Did Patcher make this graph?

no...

here is one by a different firm if you like

and another

PC software actually beat that estamate for 2011 BTW

So those graphs are based on years old, dying consoles going into 2014 and 2015 while ignoring that by then their successors would have been out? Not very accurate predictions then are they?

probably not no, but so far PC gaming has been growing faster than predicted as well, you also got to remember that this generation was only really as high as it was because of the phenomenon that was the Wii. It remains to be seen if the Wii audiance can be brought into the next generation or if they will move on to social and mobile, or even give up on gaming all together. There is also the question of if consoles can break into the Chinese market or whether that will remain dominated by F2P PC games. Predicting the future is really impossible with any accuracy.

Bigger in what way?  Number of people?  Probably already is.  Total revenue?  Maybe.  Sales of big budget retail games?  Probably never.

@ieatbabies

PCs like the Apple II and Commodore 64 both predate the NES and have hundreds of games.

I typed " Didn't become slightly popular until late 90's- end of 90's." I never said no games didn't exist on any computers predating the 90's

Nintendo and Sega ( the major competitors of gaming) were already making millions in the 1980's long before PC gaming . PC gaming didn't become slightly popular until the late 90's- end of 90's.

You can hardly say Nintendo and Sega were making millions long before PC gaming when PC gaming existed before their respective entries into the home console market.  The master system certainly wasn't significantly bigger than PC gaming, and the Genesis didn't start selling decent numbers until the 90's.  So how was Sega a major competitor in the 80's while according to you PC gaming was irrelevant?

won't happen.
the original xbox took the last major PC bastion from it ( shooters)
PC will have RTS's and MMOs now.. but everything else is better or the same on console.
soon, not next gen but the one after, we could easily have eye sensing technology which means RTS commands could be done with nothing but eye movements and voice ( and be useable not like End war)
MMOs work on console now, but its too clunky to talk since you can't have everyone talking in voice, and typing with console is a pain.

You know what? it may already be bigger than console games. People on these forums and in the wider industry press conveniently discount certain genres and payment models simply becuase they're not traditional based games with traditional revenue streams. Alternatively they're not the pre-conceived notion of a PC game because they don't have the uber graphicsand don't require relatively expensive hardware.

Think of all the casual, social, facebook, F2P models, browser-based, MMO and Indie games on the PC on top of the pre-conceived notions of traditional "PC gaming" and you'll probably find more people playing PC games than console games and similar total revenue to boot.

Thats not true, the PC will always be the king of FPS, in both control and graphics. And in pretty much every other game thats multi plat too.

Sure a bunch of noobs might not know how to set up their joypad, but it still does not change the fact.

And RTS already works perfect on PC, So does MMO's, and im sure when that eye sensing thing you are talking about comes out, PC will also have it too, if not first...
