Forums - PC Discussion - PC Problems Q&A thread

I need some PC help, over the past year my computer has started to become slower, but over the past 3+ months is starting to get slower at a fast rate. One year ago when i ran a Virus scan Norton read 340k files, now it reads 460k files. I have deleted an extensive amount of programs, games and various other files.

I'm not running many things in the background from what i can see, Norton, Firefox, and MSN then whatever else goes on in the background. I have tried many of those free up ram, and speed up PC programs and they don't really seem to do anything.

I have run those defrag and error checking things on the C drive about once a month. I'm not very good with computers and don't really know what i should do.

And sometimes my computer fails to connect to the internet, i'm on a wireless network, and it tells me windows cannot fix the problem "Clearing the DNS cache" then it tells me to contact the person who manages my network, i'm not sure what this means.

I'm going offline now, so thanks if you can offer any suggestions.

^ Reformat. If you don't want to get a friend who can. If you can't do that either, it depends on the operating system. Vista has a nice performance manager which monitors specific tasks and what resources they eat up. I think XP had something similar, or at least a free download from somewhere.

Not exactly a problem, but anyone has suggestions for skinning Windows XP?

In the past I used msstyles via uxtheme modding, but since SP3 they're bricked. Any suggestions, like Windowsblinds or something else? I hate this blue theme hehe.

Ok, I figured out the above and now I use WindowBlinds. It looks great.

Now, to another thing, it seems that I can't use my the TV Out on my HD4850. The Catalyst Control Center is detecting it, but it can't be enabled. I'm connecting it via composite (yellow cable). AMD's help fails badly.

Any ideas?

Okay, this isn't really a problem but a question.
I currently have 2 GB RAM dual channel and want to upgrade to 2 * 2GB sticks. However I was told that isn't possible. I want to know why not?

Here is the current RAM I have now.

DDR2
Module size: 1024 Mbytes.
Max Bandwidth: PC2-5300 (333 MHz)

Which is it? Is your ram 333 mhz or is it PC2-5300? (those are two different speeds of ram)

Doesn't DDR2 double that speed to 667MHz

its a matter of how much ram the motherboard supports. Dont listen to people saying that XP doesnt support 4GB of ram. Thats BS. XP jsut doesnt count past like 3.7GBs of ram. You could have 16GBs of ram and only have it read as 3.7GBs.

Wouldn't it depend on how much ram his video card has also?

im honestly not sure.. I think because the video card ram is dedicated it doesnt matter. Just dont quote me on this one.

From some quick and dirty googling it looks like that may be the case. (4 gigs + 512mb video ram = 3.5 gigs useable by windows?)

you mean XP at least. Vista supports 16GBs from what I know of. he is talking Vista.

It's all about windows 32bit and windows 64 bit. It doesn't matter which os (atleast not xp or vista)

Both 32 bit versions can only read 3.25 gigabytes (about 4 gigs in total including video card memory.. for me that's 3.25 gigs, for someone else it might be 3.50) while the 64 bit ones can read far more.

The issue is basically in the code where microsoft has chosen to lock it off (it's not that it's incapable) but it's very complicated and it's a long time ago i read through it. Basically i was told two things that go against eachother.

1. is that 32 bit only can read a certain amount of 1s and 0s and once you reach the 4 gigabytes the 32 bit system simply can't read anymore because it is 32 bit.

On the other hand i was also told that that isn't entirely true because 32 bit is capable of reading far beyond the 4 gigabytes but it was limited purposely by microsoft.

This also makes sense as you are able to actually get windows to show all of the ram through some awkward tweaking.

Anyways, hope you can use a little of my gibberish XD

Check out my game about moles ^

Ok, i'll give it a try :P
According to my computer i have installed directx9 but when i try want to play *instert a random sucky game here* it says that i don't have directx installed, and if i try to insta i mean, i know that my computer sucks (and hard) but i'm pretty sure that it can handle Warcraft III and Halo 1 (demo) so if anybody could tell me why am i having this problem i'd be very thankful :P

When I try to download something either through Firefox or IE the download never finishes correctly. From what I observe the .Part file is getting all of the information while the regular download gets none. Once they are done either both files are deleted, or the .Part file(which is useless) is the only one that remains. The regular file shows as 0kb while the .Part file increases as more information is downloaded. So basically the files I try to download are deleted, or useless. Could anybody help me figure out why it isn't downloading correctly, and what to do to fix it. It is exclusive to this computer and downloads work on my other computers. Also AVG doesn't work now, so both of these problems might be caused by a virus.

Do you have same problem that your PC is really slow?
