Forums - Gaming - What genre will dominate the next generation? (8th gen)

Every generation there seems to be one speicific genre that dominates that entire generation until the next one arrives, I'll give you a little break down of the previous generations and what genres dominated.

First generation:

Hmm not much to say about this generation, just atari and it's pong machine. So the genre....pong.

Second generation:

Now a little more serious, the 8bit era. We had the Atari 2600/5200, Magnavox, Intellevision etc, there was alot hence the video game crash. The main sellers were Space games, everything was SPACE games. So the space genre.

Third generation:

In the third gen a long came the NES, Sega master, Atari 7800. The main sellers were all platformers, Zelda, Mario. So this gen the big genre was Platformers.

Forth generation:

Consoles released for this gen was the SNES, Sega genesis, Neo geo, and the main sellers were again platformers like Mario and Sonic, but Fighters were pretty big aswell not to mention RPG's were really starting to get there foot in the door. So I like to say Platformers and Fighters for the forth gen.

Fith generation:

Now here's when Playstation entered the game, there was also Nintendo 64 and the Sega saturn. Most of the big titles where RPG's, this is when Final Fantasy titles peaked in sales. Racing games were also very big GT/Driver/Mariokart/Diddykong racing. But since it's so mixed in sales I'd still like to say this gen was the generation of RPG's, they were the big bugdet games with the highest ratings.

Sixth generation:

The Sixth generation we have the introduction of the Xbox. Other console releases are Sega DreamCast, PS2 and the Gamecube. FPS finally got there start with Halo and Extreme sports were really popular I mean who didn't have a Tony Hawk game? But the sandbox games got huge this generation, it marked the way for GTA which exploded in sales of over 50 million games sold for just the PS2 and still selling! So for that I'm calling it for the Sandbox genre.

Seventh generation:

Now finally the gen were in with the PS3, X360 and Wii. It's pretty clear FPS is the biggest genre for this generation. The market took off with Call of Duty.

Now the 8th generation is starting and it's interresting to find out what genre will prevail over the rest, what do you think is going to be the biggest genre for the 8th gen and why?

CoD, CoD, and CoD again. Why? Because millions are addicted and more are coming. That crap seems unstoppable. Me, I'll keep playing all kind of RPGs. Hopefully Bethesda game engine will be fixed at that time, even if I am a Final Fantasy fan!! :D

Since when has the second Generation been 8-Bit? Anyway, It'll probably just be more of a continuation of the genres of the last 2 generations mostly, so FPS, Sandbox Games (GTA & SR), and Adventure Platformers aka Uncharted, Dantes Inferno, that kind of stuff...

Guitar Hero 3/ Smash Hits

FPS, in this day and age it's much harder to change something that's so established.

......Zelda is a platformer?

Never mind. I believe social multiplayer games will be the great genre next generation. The Wii U controller (and possibly the rumored Xbox 3 tablet) opens up several possibilities where you can see your friends over the internet using the camera and basically play local multiplayer at different locals xD (even if they'd stick to very simple games) And, as we saw at E3 2011, party games (such as Mii Chase) will take huge advantage of giving a single player a superior controller which encourage others to cooperate to take him/her down.

...or maybe I'm just talking shit and FPS will once again take the crown.

Zelda 2 was!

Anyhow, I'm imagining a mixture of the FPS and MMO. FPS's will continue to be popular, but the advancements in consoles, particularly the Wii U's tablet, convince me that MMOs can become multiplatform on a regular basis. Plus, although WOW is losing popularity, Blizzard will release a new MMO and make WOW free to play, while other recent and upcoming MMOs and MMO-esque games such as Star Wars: The Old Republic, Dragon Quest X, The Secret World, Final Fantasy 14 2.0, Guild Wars 2, and Minecraft will boost the popularity of the genre also.

Processoors without 8-bit registers would probably be utterly worthless. So unless the Atari used analog components only to create games, I think it's pretty likely it used an 8-bit processor.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Point and click

I'd designate the 5th generation as being owned by Racers, just because RPGs were really only big on PSX. Racers ran big across the major platforms

We could see the real rise of RPGs in this generation, with games like Skyrim being a forerunner. Sandbox-ish, but the focal point on the roleplaying more than the adventure.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Sandbox (possibly mmo) and FPS is my guess.
