Japanese Company Announces Plans to Build 20,000-Mile-High Space Elevator by 2050

Scientists have long considered the possibility of creating ultra-tall space elevators that stretch beyond the earth’s atmosphere to transport satellites and shuttles into outer space without the cost and environmental impact of rocket fuels. Now a Japanese company specializing in major infrastructure projects called The Obayashi Corporation has announced plans to build a space elevator by 2050, with the aim of taking tourists 20,000 miles above the planet’s surface.

Yay, Space Elevator! Now we just need two more, and connect all three to make ring around the earth.

(Also the best game to tag is Civilization.....)

if that thing ever falls it will almost wrap around the earth anyway

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

Unlikely

I trust no one, not even myself.

Civilization was indeed the first thing that came up to my mind when I read this last week.

Hope it works out. The country 1st to get the elevator will dominate the next century in economics.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

The counterweight problem needs to be solved.

I think that one isn't as big of a deal as it seems. The natural production of an elevator would demand a 'hub' at the end of the elevator. Ergo, the space dock would be a center of commerce and counterbalance itself. Much in the same way that ships demand a naval hub or port of commerce, which have traditionally become large cities in the process.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Haven't played Civilisation so the first thing that came to my mind was Halo.

Also think that if in places like Britain, Wind Turbines get so much negative publicity with (imo rather petty and ridiculous) campaigns such as 'Save the View', something like this could galvanise even more aggressive opposition. Then again, I'm not overly familiar with the political and social scene in Japan.
