Forums - Gaming Discussion - Xbox 720: How Microsoft Could Determine Sony's Fate

Who, out of these two, do you think will win next gen?

Sony 111 29.37%

Microsoft 121 32.01%

Pretty much even 29 7.67%

Too early to tell 85 22.49%

See results 32 8.47%

Total:378

It's too early to tell, still at this moment I would say Microsoft has the better chances to win.
-At this moment they are the only ones in an healthy financial position so they can afford, more than competitors, to sell hardware on loss.
-They can cater to both casual and core audiences, since they have both core games and kinect.
-They have the better chances to create an ecosystem with phones, tablet and PCs thanks to Windows8.
-Next-gen digital delivery and online services will most likely become even more important, and M$ has already the best online infrastructure, compared to competitors.

MS is in the place to bring the most powerful console. They can buy off almost every third party devs early next gen. They can invest the most effort to developing the most advanced console. They can sell it for up to $300-400 loss per console sold if they chose to.

They have the money to do it. They have the cash reserves cushion it.

Its a HUUUUUGE investment but it will pay off if they chose to do these things.

Neither Sony nor Nintendo theoretically has the budget Microsoft has.

Lol, Maybe Sony had the money in 2005.

Yay!!!

I think SONY is in a better position to get the hardcore, hopefully they aim for it. Look at what you did with PSP, then how you fixed it with VITA. Do the same with PS3 and PS4, only this time get some more system sellers at launch and make it $350-400 at launch.

This is the first time I see somebody using the Vita as a positive example for Sonys new direction. Most people talk about it like another nail in the coffin.

It is way too early to tell.  Who would have thought that Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 are in the order like they are today? Every new gen is basically random and everyone has their strenghts.

Sony: brand name "Playstation" that sells quite a few consoles. Huge amount of quality 1st party and 2nd party developers.

Microsoft: Best and most spread online functionality (A lot of those 40 million Xbox Live users will keep on playing with their friends on the next xbox)

Nintendo: Best known franchises.

So just wait and see.

2 things that have let the vita down, system sellers and pricing, is what needs to be addressed. Bolded it. We don't even know if the vita is a success or a failure yet anyway, so let's just wait until december :P

Fixed your Sony attributes ;)

But knowing that MS is a maximum-profit company. It could go either way.

I hope they do it this way though...                                                                                       ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

First off, I find it hard to sort out the serious from the sarcastic/wishful.

How many are "almost every" third party developers? Everyone except Activision/Blizzard, EA, Ubisoft, Sega, Square-Enix, Epic or even THQ?

I sure hope that was a sarcastic part. Same goes for the "They can sell it for up to $300-400 loss per console sold if they chose to."

LMAO yeah, maybe I was day dreaming.

But yeah, MS is in the best place to win next gen. Having the largest budget and all.

*Great relief* =)

If anything, the Vita has shown that Sony hasn't really learned anything. They're trying the same strategy, just tweaked a little. One then wonders what that means for the PlayStation 4

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Can only see it being a battle like this gen no real winner of the two (in term of profit microsoft win)

Microsoft could be the bringers of there own downfall to be more sucessful next gen they need to start producing new ip's aimed at the hardcore from there own studios, Halo will always be a big seller and it's a guaranteed exclusive, Forza will always have good sales and as long as Gears stays on the Xbox then thats a great seller but too much reliance on these in house franchises (i know gears isn't in house) could be deadly if they run out of steam. Kinect will likely be a focus as well and that worries me greatly as my Kinect is a dust collector these days and has been for quite a while!

Sony really need to make profit from the get go or at worst a very small loss, coming out at a high price again will be a damaging blow really, they also need to focus more on there OS improving the flow and features is vital to getting back some reputation. PSN need to remain free and be more reliable (although i've never had a problem with it) and the intergration of things like cross game chat (cross video chat maybe?) to improve the social aspect. A Mic with each console would be a great move as well (double edged sword really when it comes to online play) throw in everything you'd need for motion controls or dump the idea!

Nintendo are going to stuggle i think, hoping to achieve anything close to the success they achieved this gen would be very nieve and throwing a console to market this year could be a bad move especially as the console is starting to sound expensive! They need to throw alot more weight behind online functions and make it work well, new ip's are needed to claim marketshare from Sony and Microsoft, reliance on Mario and Zelda is a safety net but they need to start pursing multi-plats and making sure there of equal quality to it's counter-parts (or better)

If rumours are true and MS really disables used games, then Sony by far.

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.
