Or option 4 , Sony chooses to compete directly with both Nintendo and MS, they release a console at 6x the power and a tablet style controller with a camera, however Microsoft had a head start launching in 2012. Nintendo also launched early Sony is playing catch up relying entirely on its first party line up no exclusives and no unique features.

Or my option #5. Sony opts out of a direct conflict releasing a platform more powerful just enough to have an edge and support Unreal4. Have enough under the hood for developers to continue pushing the hardware at least four years. Sony suddenly has Epics full support they have all of the higher end studios in their pockets. Every developer can port their games to PS4 with ease except for the tablet and/or camera. Sony would have unique games and exclusive support.

You say quantity beats quality, NES beat everyone with fewer games and SNES restricted the amount of games. Its the quality of the games and the uniqueness of the hardware. Fact is Microsoft is scrambling to out do Nintendo and Nintendo is doing everything they can to not compete with Microsoft or Sony. In fact developing cross platform games next generation will be extremely hard. Sony will get no where by following Microsoft or taking on Nintendo. The industry is changing and Sony won't get anywhere trying to beat Nintendo or Microsoft at their own games.

I'd say this new generation will be the generation of non competition as everyone scrambles to make their hardware unique.

Nintendo have been doing their own thing with Wii and now trying to break away with Wiiu, MS will likely add more needless multi-media features to their nextbox while relying mostly on 3rd party software and a small focus on their own, and Sony will likely be a powerhouse on all fronts with new ip, and a focus on centralized established ip to keep PS3 fans interested presenting 2 or 3 of their biggest ip every yr. 

i think dual shock 4 will have a tablet with augmented reality features. i also think Sony will opt out of an HD or 3D tablet screen. 

i think Joe covered everything else, so while it would seem they'd all have the same gimmick to rope you in. they'll all be different in some way providing a different experiance.

Move will have lots of software, and again Power will be big on PS4, but PS4 will likely on 6 times more powerful then the comp.

EDIT: if the DualShock 4 itself is turned into a tablet

i guess just because they have a patent for a touch screen doesn't mean they'll use it for PS4, but it could be a kool side feature.

To make things worse the competition has bucket loads of money (talking mostly MS here) .

it's almost a given that NO game company wants to explore investments in their systems like we seen with ps3 because the loss's from the consoles will wipe there bank out just as quick as it was earned

and the rumours are already stating that 720 wont be anything too crazy so i see them aiming for a low price and keeping the loss's as small as possible while delivering a console powerful enough to run the Samaritan Demo

1. Irrespective of the amount sony invest in their next gen console...a failed console is stil a failed console. We cant look at playstation as a seperate entity from its parent company. Sony cant afford another failed platform. Especially not in the gaming industry, where they look to be strong. Sure having a lower investment would minimize loses, but the damage done by a failed platform is huge. (whether they actually do fail or not is a matter of opinion of course.) And imo a beefed up ps3 with nothing new/innovative will not be a great success.

2. How feasible is that realistically? Lets say Wii U becomes the platform of choice for 3rd party developers...you saying sony now has to add a tablet controller? Similarly if kinect 2.0 takes off with the casuals...and gets good support, sony then needs to copy them? Two main problems here: 1. costs - if sony were to release all these things with the console the consoles price will be through the roof! 2. copying competitors does not ensure the same success. Look at wii/ move.

3. Think ive already given my opinion on the "investing" issue :)

4. MS are in a better situation though imo...they have the biggest gaming region in their pockets...and a run away smash hit in kinect. If they add a few wow factors to kinect 2.0, add the existing install base of live, and the general core following MS also has....they seem set.

You seem to associate investments with innovation...i do not. Sony can and should come up with something different something amazing if they want to stay relavant in the industry...this does not need a heavy investment but rather some insight and creativity followed up with a seamless implementation and a worthy marketing campaign. Also please keep in mind by innovation im not talking about graphical innovation etc. Im literally talking about anything significantly different that makes them better than the rest. Im sure sony is hoping for same....


This is an amazing thread about what we thought to "expect" from the Playstation 4, Xbox 720 and WiiU. There was so much confident in the Xbox, hope for the Wii and doom talking about Sony and the new "playstation".
