I like it :D

WTF? Women and non-gamers love Mario Kart.

It is to racing what Smash Bros. is to fighting games.

The best of its genre? I agree!

Signature goes here!

Doomed? Games on handheld devices are selling more than ever before and to a much wider audience than the Big Three could have anticipated. The success of games on tablets and phones is only going to result in more games available to the public at large. The 3DS is already showing that it can coexist with this level of competition. Doomed? Seriously? So long as devices and games are profitable, doom talk is empty air.

On this topic, I love Smash, love Mario Kart, love Halo but one of these three games is different from thee other two.

One is a more, "core" game that has cross-over appeal while thee other two are, "casual" games that hardcore gamers (in the case of smash, modify) make a hardcore community out of.

I don't see how Halo is more of a "Core" game than Smash Bros or Mario Kart ...

I would classify all three as cross-over games because their gameplay is simplified compared to other games in the same/similar genre and yet is still reasonably fulfilling (easy to pick up, difficult to master), and their content has a broader appeal that is unlikely to offend anyone.

Casual games selling well on portable devices isn't something new. The DS was the same.

Top 5 DS games:

New Super Mario Bros.
Nintendogs (Casual)
Mario Kart DS
Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day (Casual)
Pokémon Diamond / Pearl

Top 5 3DS games:

Super Mario 3D Land
Mario Kart 7
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
Nintendogs + cats (Casual)
Monster Hunter 3G

What are the 2 other casual games you had in mind?

I would definitely call Mario Kart a casual game. Has the same mass appeal as something like Wii sports and is super accessible. Zelda is a re-release, Monster Hunter is only popular in one region and SM3DL isn't exactly "hardcore", but I guess it's not casual either so I'll give you that.

The other game I had in mind was Brain Training. My deepest apologies.

And be fair, I did say Nintendo could be an exception. (bolded)

Okay, I'm afraid we don't agree on the definition of a casual game since I'd never put Mario Kart in the casual column.

Nor do you have mine as all of the above are casual outside of MonHun and even then, it's a huge strecth to not consider that a casual game.

I'm going to make a thread one of these days comparing the sales of smartphones to the sales of sheets of paper.
