Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony: We Should Probably Develop Less Games

The only problem that I see is they (Sony) don't space their games to well.

games are good for the gamer. and Sony has been churning out tons of very high quality exclusives, with 1 or 2 duds. thats good for the gamer, if they reduce those games, its bad. sure i want Sony to do good, but if it comes at the expense of games, then i will be moving to which ever company provides me those games. i dont buy the system so the company makes profit, i buy the system for the games.

Some people don't really have that option since most of the time, no other company can give them the same experience, this is true for some Sony games but even more so with Nintendo games that no other company seems to be able to reproduce

If having a couple less games a year mean a company I like gets to keep making games then I'm all for it

great job breaking the points of the thread title down.

as a selfish Sony(ninty) fan, i'd say the more games a yr.(cause i tend to buy only Sony exclusives)the better.

but that doesn't mean it's the best thing for business. i say Sony should focus on 6 to 8 titles a yr, making sure that some are their more established/profitable ip, while continuing their thirst for creating new ip.

the reason i choose Playstation is because the offer so many amazing exclusives every years that are so varied, i don't want 1 or 2 big game a year.. this can only end badly for Gamers.

so 1 (2 if you count ALL 4 One) game out of... what 10. all the other games were of superb quality.

and it doesnt matter to the gamer, until the company ceases to make games. what happens in the mean time is of no concern, its up to the company to be profitable, and if it takes making less games, milking some more like other companies do to become profitable, thats still not good for the gamer.

games are good for the gamer. and Sony has been churning out tons of very high quality exclusives, with 1 or 2 duds. thats good for the gamer, if they reduce those games, its bad. sure i want Sony to do good, but if it comes at the expense of games, then i will be moving to which ever company provides me those games. i dont buy the system so the company makes profit, i buy the system for the games.

and the only game that i regret buying from Sony was Socom 4, and i bought that because of the move support ( and perhaps the little fanboy in me), all the other games i bought from Sony either met my expectations or vastly exceeded them.

So really in no way is it good for the gamer, for a company to do what Microsoft does.

if i worked for Microsoft or had their stock, i would love it, but i dont. if i worked for Sony or owned their stock, i would be pisses, but i dont. i own their game system, i own it to play games, not to profit Sony.

They had more serious duds than the 2 socoms, those are just the ones I happened to mention.  And I agree with you, it isn't good for the gamer as far as having an awesome library.  But people can only play so many games too.  I mean, they had more exclusives than their attach rate I think...

I understand where you are coming from.  I'm just giving the overall picture.  Let's say Sony goes bankrupt because of their business practices and all of a sudden your only options are Microsoft and Nintendo, but those companies don't do anything different than what they are now.  Wouldn't that suck?  I think it would suck.  Competition drives new innovations.  You wouldn't be too happy then without all the good exclusives to play.  I mean, like people said... no one buys some of their exclusives, good or bad.  So the "gamer" isn't really hurt if the "gamer" never bought any copies to begin with.  If your install base is 60 mill, and a game like Resistance can only sell 1 mill, down over 150% from previous releases... that just isn't good.  I'm sure they lost money on that.  Very little reason to make a 4th one.  Focus your efforts elsewhere.

It's one thing when you make a new game that sells well and the fanbase is pissed off about certain features.  Take Gears of War.  Fans always piss and moan about Gears 3 not being as fun as Gears 2.  Same happened with Gears 2 to 1.  But it's still good enough so that they play it, plus there are new and different features about the newer games that seems to make them like it more in other areas.  (Horde in 2, Beast, Arcade, New Horde in 3).   With many Sony exclusives, that doesn't seem to be the case.  They just seem to die.  That means they aren't engaging the fan base, and the sales won't be there for the next game.  You can say, but that's a good game that gamers will be deprived of.  But in reality... how many gamers are we talking about?  Do only 1 million out of 60+ million of their users consider themselves to be hardcore?  That's not enough.  But I don't think even many hardcore gamers buy a lot of their exclusives just going on sales.

You also admit you're a bit of a fanboy, so for every game but socom to meet or exceed all your expectations... that is not the case of most PS3 owners.  Or gamers in general.  I still don't get what was so special about Oblivion, and I still think that SF4 was vastly inferior to MK vs DC and SC4 in terms of fun.  But that's just me.

I'm not saying for them to not take chances and make games like Heavy Rain or Little Big Planet.  I just don't think they should continue making games that people don't buy/they can't devote enough resources to/franchises are clearly dying or dead.

To be honest, I have a funny feeling that their developing costs are also higher than other companies that do the same, just judging on how they run their business in all aspects.  I'm sure budgets can be trimmed without sacrificing quality with them.  At the same time, they still need to cut some games.  But like I said, it matters because you wouldn't want to be stuck with just 1 Wii U and 1 Xbox 720 or whatever they will be called.

BOOM!  FACE KICK!

yeah I can't say this is surprising, and I think its time Sony realise this, what some people might not realise is this may not even affect them, take last years Son'y published titles: (arranged in three groups: Big Profit - Slight Profit/Break Even - Big Loss)

LittleBigPlanet 2
Killzone 3
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception

DC Universe Online (since it became P4F, I doubt its selling that well)

Infamous 2 (probably slight profit, but with the DLC, I'd say its a healthy profit now)

Resistance 3 (very disappoiting sales, break even, much more was expected)
The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection (fair profit for relatively little work, but not that many sales)
White Knight Chronicles 2 (just publishing costs, but not many sales)
MLB 11: The Show (not that many sales, but its a yearly franchise)

Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One (quite a failure for the franchise, the franchise is pretty much dead :/)
MotorStorm: Apocalypse (same as above)
SOCOM 4 (same as above)
Ape Escape On The Move (pretty big failure)

PlayStation Move Heroes (pretty big failure)
Medieval Moves: Deadmund's Quest (another failure)
Start the Party 2 (failure)
Carnival Island (failure)
Everybody Dance (failure)
God of War: Origins Collection (very low sales, a failure even thoguh it was a port)

I think all the titles underlined, should of not been given the green light to be produced, they are either unlikely to succedd or are using a franchise which doesn't sell well (like MLB 11, I think it should be cut now), the other titles are a risk, but a risk worth taking and not entirely predictable

Advertising plays a large part in the low sales of many PS3 exclusives, but from what I've experienced through research and a lot of anecdotal evidence, the main reason behind the low sales of some PS3 games is a lack of good combination of quality and appeal. Games like Uncharted and God of War are high quality and appeal to the masses, hence, the higher sales.

But then you have a game like say Killzone which is a well-made, quality game. But it lacks appeal. It's not very accessible. You try to get some new people to play it and they feel lost & uncomfortable. It's too hardcore to be super successful on the PS3. Or you take something like LBP, which is clever and innovating, but most PS3 fans think it's too kiddy. Or you take a game like SOCOM 4 which is just low quality.

At least that's from what I experienced. Most accessible, non-niche, games do sell well. Sony can make a lot more blockbusters. They just gotta make them the right way.

I think the reason why LBP is not a succes, is the same reason valid for SOCOM 4 .

If they tried to make a good Crash Bandicoot instead, it would have sold TONS.

Not necessarily if the 2 or 3 big games @ year are good enough to keep you occupied for months. Ps3 has already a lot of variety thank to wide 3rd party support, a major focus on a smaller number of 1st party titles could mean even more awesome sony games :)

Take Resistance for example, it's undeniably a very good game but Ps3 has already an huge variety of FPS, not to mention Sony has already Killzone as a flagship FPS title. I think the Insomniac talent could have been better spent on something more unique and original.

I'm confused, you say definitive driving simulator but I don't see Forza mentioned. Maybe I should check the reviews again...

Why would reviews matter when we're clearly talking about sales? Maybe when you count all the Forza bundles together it might actually have outsold GT5 as a series but I'm not sure. Can Forza be mentioned in the same topic as Gran Turismo? I don't think so. Need for Speed, maybe, but Forza? Nah.

I'd add in Mario Kart, but MK fans are clearly happier comparing Mario Kart to ModNation Racers.
