Forums - General Discussion - How much profit is okay when selling used stuff?

Although this is gaming-related, I put this in off-topic, because it's not about the games per se.

I'd like to ask your opinion about reselling games on the side.

As some of you know, I live in Japan. One of my big hobbies is retro gaming. So sometimes I find old cartridges for cheap and sell of those I don't really want or need. So far so good.

I'd like to know, what you think. How much profit is okay to make with selling old used games?

Let's say I find a rare game for 2$. The normal going rate of that particular game is 70$ on eBay. Is it immoral or not right to sell that game to someone for 70$? Should I sell it for 20$ and risk that the other guy then sells it for 70$ himself?

Or don't you see a problem with selling something at a 3400% profit?

I'd be happy to get a few opinions, because in my head I find it okay to just sell if for the normal going price, but then I falter and think it would make me a bad person... (BTW, I'm not talking about commercial sales here. It's just about making some money on the side to finance the games I personally want...)

I think it is ok to sell for the going price because that's what the game is worth at the moment. I always sell stuff for the most I can.

You will always want to price something at the highest the market will bare, when it comes to profit and losses, you really cant have a conscience about it. Its just one of the costs of doing business.

Its not immoral to follow demand in a market, least of all in quirky luxuries such as retro games. Sell them with great profit with a clear conscience.

If someone is willing to buy it for a price that you specify, it's perfectly fine. It's not like you're tricking them into anything.

do you find it immoral to have only paid 2$ for this game you know to be worth a good deal more than that? perhaps you should go pay that person a fair amount of money...?

I only buy at stores. So when something costs a low amount (like 2$) there's not much I can do. Wanting to pay a higher price would be the opposite of haggling. :D

Morality is not about the percentage of profit you make, it's about being honest about the product you resell. If the product in question is in good condition, then there's no problem in selling it for the normal going price. But it would be morally wrong to knowingly sell a defect product for that price.

This, you really need to be truthfull about the condition of the product especially with retro games. Most of the buyers are collectors that are looking to add to their collection.

I agree of course. I'd never sell a defect product, or only when stating clearly that it is defect.

Thanks for all the opinions so far. It really means a lot to me.

Especially Rol's comment makes me feel good, as am always honest about the stuff I sell. (I also take lots of pictures, so it would be hard to sell stuff that's in bad condition. ;)

I also collect retro games, so I know how important it is to be honest about the condition of something.

The thing is the person that is selling it at $70 will see that you put it on sale for a price that is considered an outlier. He or some other seller will probably buy you copy just for the purpose of putting it on sale again for the higher price. So in theory, you lose revenue to some other seller instead of giving a gamer a good deal. In retail stores its fine to charge lower prices since most of the time the people buying are going to play the game and the gamer looking for the game will buy your copy out of mixture of interest and convenience but online, you need to make the best offer to the consumer without losing potential revenue because why would only want enough money to buy 4 boxes of Twinkies when you can buy 14 boxes of Twinkies.
