Let say you buy and play SSBB which it clear to me everyone says they don't care about graphics then compares and talk about SSBB graphics. ( I agree they look good) Let say during the game you get a very close up look at Mario and say "Wow, look at the details and amazing graphics." The cost of the 3D model of is the same rather SD or HD because you can use the exact same models. Yet 95% of the game you will not see Mario this close to see all those nice details. But when you use this exact same model in HD even though you won't see any more details in a close-up of Mario you will see these amazing details farther in the distance. With most PC games you can change the resolution to match your monitor native resolution but uses the same 3d models. Again you can see greater details at greater distances but this requires the GPU to work harder. The more detailed goes into the 3d models the more it will cost. Of course with HD an artist can put even more details in close-ups if desired and thus cost more.

Yes thats exactly one of the reason of a higher cost of HD games, inorder for it to shine you need to put alot more details in there than SD games, and the new HD hardware give more advance instructions producing eye candy graphic and that is what really seperate the advanced hardware to the low end console.
even if you blow up SSBB to a higher resolution it still cant compete with HD console games that built from the ground up taking advantage of all those new eye candy instructions.
