Forums - Sales Discussion - 15 biggest new IPS this gen.

One of the biggest surprises this gen is the universal appeal of Assassin's Creed.

I think it is a damn good series and by far the best new series this generation.

Around the Network

That's a nice list. As you asked for what you missed, here's a couple that beat some of the ones you listed.

Mario & Sonic (although this one is debateable as a new IP)  - 22.78 million

Imagine - 19.7 million

Cooking Mama - 14.63 million

MySims - 12.18 million

Big Brain Academy - 10.22 million

High School Musical - 8.83 million (excluding the Ps2 games)

Carnival Games - 8.00 million

Edit: Oh, and depending on how you count it, the Lego series might count for this generation too, as the first proper Lego game launched after the DS was released. It's at around 34 million not counting the Ps2 games. Also, I noticed you already had some series there in one fashion or another,so apologies about that.

Not a good era for new IPs. Especially considering how some of these, like Nintendogs, Brain Age, Layton, Resistance, Rock Band, and Imagine are already on the decline. Here's hoping that new IPs pick up steam on the 3DS, Vita, and Wii U this year.

How exactly is this not a good era for new ips? Ignoring the ones on that list there are things like Dead Space, Mirrors Edge, Army of Two, Souls games, Bayonetta, Crackdown, L.A Noire, Portal, Dead island, Infamous etc etc.

Those are only ones that have a high chance at a sequel. If we include games that didn't get massive sales but got good reviews like Shadows of the Damned, Vanquish, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey etc etc.

This generation has been a pretty incredible time for new IPs. Especially big budget triple AAA titles.

Turkish says and I'm allowed to quote that: Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3 look better than Unreal Engine 4 games will or the tech demo does. Also the Naughty Dog PS3 ENGINE PLAYS better than the UE4 ENGINE.

i included littlebigplanet psp sales, just didn't list the name twice because its name is the same as the ps3 version. Also I consider Mysims part of the sims ip and mario and sonic as part of the sonic ip. I already had imagine series but I will add cooking mama and high school musical. Also I'm not including the lego series because the first lego game did not come out on the ds it was only on last gen platforms so I don't think its a new ip to this gen.

They spend a lot of money on publicity on that one, though.

The secret to success in this case was not advertising imo, it was the fact that many people wanted to like this franchise right from the start, even with only so-so (by today's inflated standards) review scores of around 80 for the first game. This universal appeal of a franchise with a historical setting surprised me. Assassin's Creed is one of the few new "traditional" gaming franchises of this casual/shooter dominated gen which can be called really successful imo.

Interesting thing I noticed. Just the ps3 version of assassin's creed is bigger than any other new ip on the ps3 and just the 360 version will pass gears of war once the next assassins creed comes out.

I included the wii series as one because even though they play differently they are all part of the same IP. Kind of like how mario kart and super mario galaxy are both part of the mario ip. Same goes for the kinect IP.

Imagine is already on the list.

Also, I wouldn't count Mario & Sonic because those could be classified under Mario Sports games (though technically it was made by Sega so it might still count...).

He also might be viewing MySims as a version of The Sims.

And he also included Big Brain Academy in the Brain Age listing (which if that's the case, then the other Nintendo brain teasing games should be listed as well).

Cooking Mama and High School Musical do seem to qualify I think...Carnival Games would qualify if it weren't for the fact that either of those 2 IPs would kick both Carnival Games and Bioshock off the list.

You're right. No idea how I missed all of that, so thanks for pointing it out.

I'd have to disagree with Brain Age and Big Brain Academy. They're the same genre, and made by the same company, but that doesn't make them the same franchise. They're highly different games, and made by different studios at Nintendo.

Edit: You're also going to have to find out what to make of Nintendo's mental training franchises. It's sort of hard to define stuff like Flash Focus: Training, English Training, Personal Trainer: Cooking and such. They're all training games made by Nintendo for the DS. Are they all part of the same franchise, or are they all different franchises? They're made by the same company, and are all training oriented. They're just as similar as each other - some actually more - as the Wii series is.

You have the following games, and probably some more

Personal Trainer: Cooking, Personal Trainer: Math and Personal Trainer: Walking totalling up 5.39 million. Then there's Flash Focus (3.77 million), English Training (3.33 million), Common Sense Training (1.71 million).

The three Personal Trainer ones are obviously one IP (they share a name), but the other 3 are a tad harder to tell.

You could also probably just as well put Zumba Fitness up there now as a series. It's currently at only 6.83 million, but it's already sold 550,000 in 2012. It's easily going to pass 10 million for the generation, and is probably likely to shoot past 15 million too.

There's the "EA Sports" franchise, too. It's at 8.7 million, and looking to pass 10 million as well.

Nice to see high school musical up there

Isn't this a bit of an unfair way of doing it? Comparing franchises with eight (possibly more?) installments, to some with only two. The list probably wouldn't change much anyway, but it should have been based on the averages of the games series' in my mind. Now it's just a "Who can milk franchises more?" type of dealio.
