Forums - Sales Discussion - 15 biggest new IPS this gen.

Well a few things have changed this year due to a few big titles that came out over the holidays. Sadly vgchartz's PC figures still are rather poor so PC popular IPS such as portal, left 4 dead, and mass effect got the shaft, but here it is top 10 new ips of this generation according to vgchartz. I also did not count sales for any dlc, which only had a big effect on rock band sales. Finally I only included sales for current gen games. I did include the ps2 port of rock band since its the same game as the current gen versions... but not completely new games that came out on the ps2, 3ds, or vita for an ip that started this gen.

EDIT Adding a few games mentioned but I'll leave the games that they replaced as runner ups.

1. Wii series

(Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Wii Fit Plus, Wii Party, Wii Music, Wii Play: Motion)

193.63mil

2. Brain Age

(Brain Age, Brain Age 2, Big Brain Academy, Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree)

45.37mil

3. Assassin's Creed

(Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed 2, Brotherhood, Revelations, Bloodlines, Discovery, Altair's Chronicles)

36.40mil

4. Just Dance

(Just Dance 3, Just Dance 2, Just Dance, Just Dance Kids, Just dance Wii, Just Dane Kids 2, Just Dance Spinoffs)

27.36mil

5. Kinect Series

(Kinect Adventures!, Kinect Sports, Kinect Sporks: Season Two, Kinectimals, Kinect Joy Ride, Kinect: Disneyland Adventures, Kinectimals: Now with Bears!)

24.48mil

6. Nintendogs

(Nintendogs)

24.37mil

7. Rockband Series

(Rock Band, Rock Band 2, Rock Band 3, and countless spinoffs)

21.45mil

8. Imagine

(41 different Imagine games...)

19.70mil

9. Gears of War

(Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, Gears of War Triple Pack)

17.52mil

10. Professor Layton

(Professor Layton and the Curious Village, Diabolical Box, Unwound Future, Last Specter)

13.88mil

11. Uncharted

(Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Uncharted 3)

13.01mil

12. Saints Row

(Saints Row, Saints Row 2, Saints Row: The Third)

9.68mil

13. LittleBigPlanet

(LittleBigPlanet, LittleBigPlanet 2, LittleBigPlanet(PSP))

9.26mil

14. High School Musical

(High School Musical, High School Musical 2, High School Musical 3)

8.83mil

15. Resistance

(Resistance, Resistance 2, Resistance 3, Resistance: Retribution)

8.10mil

16. Carnival Games

(Carnival Games, Carnival Games: Mini Golf, New Carnical Games, Monkey See Monkey Do!)

7.98mil

17. Bioshock

(Bioshock, Bioshock 2)

7.05mil

Looking ahead bioshock, assassins creed, and just dance will likely move up the list as they all have current gen sequels coming out this year that should sell well. Mass Effect will enter the list and replace Resistance, and probably pass bioshock, littlebigplanet, and saints row as well. Gears of War might end up passing the Imagine series, Uncharted might pass Professor Layton. So by the end of this gen the list will likely be

1.Wii, 2. Assassins Creed, 3. Just Dance, 4. Brain Age, 5. Kinect, 6. Nintendogs, 7. Rockband, 8. Gears of War, 9. Imagine, 10. Uncharted, 11. Professor Layton, 12. Mass Effect, 13. Saints Row, 14. Bioshock, 15. LittlebigPlanet.

Left 4 Dead and Portal would have made the list and been over the 10mil mark if all PC sales and orange box sales were included.

Overall the big new IP winners this gen were Nintendo and Ubisoft who each had 3 new ips sell 19mil+ this gen. But imo new IPs performed poorly this gen. If we included current gen sales of any IP including those that came out in previous years, only the top 4 new ips would have made the list, as mario, call of duty, pokemon, grand theft auto, guitar hero, lego, Halo, Fifa, madden, Sonic, and the sims, all outsold the kinect series, and other ips such as Final Fantasy, zelda, battlefield, elder scrolls, gran turismo, Fallout, Forza, Red Dead, NBA, Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, Street Fight, need for speed, outsold many of the ips on the list.

I might have missed some new IPS so please point them out if you see any that should have made the list.

Not a good era for new IPs. Especially considering how some of these, like Nintendogs, Brain Age, Layton, Resistance, Rock Band, and Imagine are already on the decline. Here's hoping that new IPs pick up steam on the 3DS, Vita, and Wii U this year.

Love and tolerate.

The "Wii series" should've been:

-The Wii Sports Series (Wii Sports + Wii Sports Resort)
-The Wii Fit Series (Wii Fit + Wii Fit Plus)
-The Wii Play Series (Wii Play + Wii Play Motion)

The games don't have much in common besides the 'Wii' in the title

This.

Also I'm kind of surprised that Resistance made the list, I was under the impression it didn't do to well.

Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League

Also I wouldnt say the Kinect games are an IP theres little linking them together unlike say for example Gears of War.

Also wheres Angry Birds, the biggest new IP this generation

All bow to me the VGChartz current reigning 3DS prediction champion

Bet with tbone51: Pokeon X & pokemon Y will not sell more than 8 million in 2013

July 2009 daveJ saidTrue the wii has a large lead now but by 2017 the most likely result will be 1. ps3 2. xbox360 3. wii <-- wii's successor launched in 2011 effectively killing sales of the wii

Well they share the same main characters...

That list is a lie. Nintendon't have new IP's.

One of the biggest surprises this gen is the universal appeal of Assassin's Creed.

They spend a lot of money on publicity on that one, though.
