Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Rumor: Microsoft Points to be discontinued

So no more free points

Microsoft’s proprietary virtual currency system, Microsoft Points, will be phased out by the end of the year, according to a source with knowledge of the company’s decision. The change will affect developers for Windows Phone, the Zune marketplace and Xbox Live.

By the end of 2012, all transactions will be based on the region set on the purchasing account and real money will be used to purchase all Windows Phone content. The move puts the Windows Phone Marketplace in line with the purchasing practices used in the App Store and the Android Market.

When asked Microsoft declined to provide further information, with a Microsoft spokesperson responding with “we do not comment on rumours or speculation.”

Mobile developers that have publishing agreements with Microsoft are being warned to plan their upcoming downloadable content (DLC) and in-app purchases in accordance with the change. Customers with existing Microsoft Points balances will have them converted into their local currency after the switch.

That's a nice decision?

I like more money based prices then MS Points... I prefer to ser how much I'm spending in real currency.

Real money has always been used to buy items on windows phone! had mine for over 12 months and MS points has never been an available option for phone based apps.

On phones everything is already done via real money. But it would be great if they ditched points on the 360 and Zune.

I'd like to see this happen...

Good, Microsoft points are stupid. And you always have some stupid amount left over after a transaction that you can't do anything with.

As long as they don't get rid of the retail cards for XBL Gold memberships and currency, I'm happy. I so do enjoy buying these cards for less than their actual value online, thus saving me a bundle of money over time, especially when it comes to renewing my annual Gold membership.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Why? The conversion rate of MS points is pretty cool at 80 for $1, much less confusing than Nintendo's 100 points for $1 system.

I know its much easier to keep track of but I still think points in general are unecessary.

About freaking time.

About time.

MS Points are terrible. Should have got rid a long time ago.
