Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 flops in US (March) - what now?

Godfather Wii is very surprising: I plan to pick that up as my next game but still have SPM on the plate...

But it's nothing a crushing market-share advantage won't fix, which is where the Wii is headed. I suspect Godfather will have a much longer tail on Wii than PS3...

First.

BenKenobi88 - Nintendo needs to get 'mature' gamers to buy the console... or at least buy the games on their console, and the rival. Games like Eternal Darkness is how it is done. I would buy Eternal Darkness2. I would actually buy that over any game coming out in 2007. However I dont buy crappy multiplatform games. (it's rare when I get one, and usually those are actually good games, and I choose the platform, I will be most confertable with. It used to be the GameCube (wave bird controllers) Then it went to the PS2 (logitech wireless controllers). And now I have the Wii... (Worst game controller since NES) and the PS3... (feels just like the PS2 controller... with no wire).

I would choose the PS3 over the Wii every time. (it would hopefully have better graphics too).

Nintendo needs to PAVE the way. They need to make it so I buy the 10$ cheaper version, instead of the PS3 version.

What? The Wii is meant for everyone? So that means that GodFather should have sold 2x what it did on the PS3... What? The Wii version sold 17% LESS? That means the Wii is faling HORRIBLY for crappy 3rd party multiplatform games.

well if it's a crappy multiplatform game, who gives a crap?

This may be stereotypical, but perhaps there are more of the kind of gamer who would play Godfather buying Playstations than Nintendo consoles...that's how it's been for a while.

What? GTA sells better on Playstation than any other platform? Maybe it's because it started on Playstation and everybody associates these types of game to Playstation...it's familiar territory.

The fact that Godfather sold on the Wii at all is good enough for me. It's a mature game, it's on the Wii, and it sold a fair amount. Considering that many Wii users are (a) kids, (b) adults not interested in violent games, or (c ) casual gamers, I think you're overreacting.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

First off the Wii is not a mature audience platform, it is tailoured to thefamily audience a console a parent will enjoy as well as a child. A console with some mature titles and some childrens games. Yes for everyone. Nintendo's ability to maintain its dominant niche (Children's market) is very important to the companies survival. The GameCube was by in large seen as a family oriented games console and as such families tended to buy it. Nintendo fans who are die hard first party supporters are also the life blood of Nintendo's consoles. The X-box had all the mature games a gamer could want and in the end lost to the GameCube. 24-million to 26-million GameCube ended up beating Microsoft in the last leg of the race proving that the adult audience isn't enough to offset the children and youth audience that Nintendo has catered to for years.

The reasons for God Father not selling well are obvious. Nintendo fans dominate the Wii and as such buy first party first and third party later. This will clear up in a matter of months as supply catches up with demand but for now its the die hard fans who have Wii's not the casual gamers. Also as said above the family audience and now seniors and other casual gamers are also purchasing the console for their loved ones. This has meant a lack of hardcore FPS fans which if you look at history Nintendo has lacked for over a generation.

It's only a matter of time before sales improve for titles like The GodFather at the moment their just aren't enough hardcore gamers on the Wii. More are going to come as supply meets demand!

I'll go out on a limb right now:

April US sales: The DS & Wii will be the two top selling consoles. The PS3 will sell under 100k for the month.

...then its all downhill for the PS3, until the first price cut.

Maybe people that own Wiis actually have a wider variety of good games to choose from, instead of an FPS, a racing game, and flOw.... Wii owners don't have to justify owning their console by purchasing a stupid mob game, lol. We can download SNES games that are 10x more fun than godfather, and still not care about the graphics.

Geez man, Sony won't drop the price for a long time, they aren't used to being in last place in console hardware. Nintendo figured it out after 6 months, and in may 2002 the gamecube price went from 249 to 199. Sony should have only had 1 variety of PS3 (the 60gig) and it shoulda been $499. They would have lost more initially, but they would have sold a whole lot more systems. I'm very happy to be a Nintendo fanboy right now, they don't release different versions of different consoles at the same time. They usually wait 2 years and release a better version of it! I prefer that to having to choose whether to get the DS Lite 20meg or the DS Lite 60meg with Wi-fi.

I wouldn't exactly call that going out on a limb.

I keep saying this but..I don't think that Wii will ever pass 360 in America.

Let me just say that I totally disagree with The Source here (obviously, for anyone who's seen my history).

I said it once and I'll say it again:

Within July 2007.

Underestimate the Wii and it will be at your own peril. Just like the DS.

20 Million Worldwide Sold THROUGH AT LEAST by end of the year. By then XBox 360 in the Americas will be a distant memory for sales figures to the Wii.

XBox 360 has been out for nearly a year and a half and has just sold 6 million units in the Americas, their strongest region. Wiis only been out less than half a year supply constrained and demand tasked and has sold about 2 1/2 million. Once supply improves that number rises. And those who think Nintendo won't improve supply obviously don't remember Nintendo's love of making money.

Remember most of these sales are based purely on Wii Sports alone. This summer will be a whole new kettle of fish once Nintendo brings in those online playable titles. (kettle of fish? who came up with these metaphors anyhow?!)

eh, all i can think of for this conversation is that namco (i think) said they have to sell 500k per game they release on the ps3 to break even on development costs. Thus motorstorm is not exactly a sucess IMHO.

and something about wii's having 1/5th the dev cost of the other 2 systems. so, 100k to break even on a exclusive, or some such. Just seems more likely to appeal to ps2 dev teams to me is all.

Summer's going to be death for the 360 and especially the PS3 without price-cuts. The 360 has 'big games' lined up - Mass Effect, Forza, Blue Dragon - but these won't expand their base / sell systems. The PS3 has zilch except for Lair. Wii may be worst of all in terms of software (Pokemon?), but won't stop it from setting all-time records for system sales.

Hmmm... I think you have a point there :)

Referring to this list: http://forum.pcvsconsole.com/viewthread.php?tid=11067

...when is the last time a (non-Gamecube) console sold less than 100k units in the US in a month? (also excluding the Xbox, since the 360 has been released...).

The answer - it has only ever happened ONCE (since 2002 anyway). The Xbox 1 sold 80k in April 2002, then received a price cut - then boomed from there. The next two sets of WORST monthly sales ever(*) in the US are held by the PS3 (Feb & March 2007).

(* - the Xbox did hit 120k once, and 130k a couple of times in its lifetime. But considering that the gaming market is now considerably larger than in 2002/2003, Im comfortable with those figures).

That's right everyone... the PS3 is approaching GC sales figures in the US.
