Codemasters CEO Rod Cousens speaks out about the Wii

Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Codemasters CEO Rod Cousens speaks out about the Wii

Griffin: one could argue that forcing "crappy" developers to leave the industry would be a good thing (although I don't actually think it is, as I expect an industry with nothing but huge, big budget games would cause significant economic problems) but to complain about "small" developers?

I have never, in my entire life, seen anyone argue that it's a good thing for an industry to only be accessible by giant corporations with huge developmental funds.

Yeah! You stick it to the little guy Griff! Gooooo giant corporate conglomerates! Woooooo!

It's always the 3rd parties who's games dont' sell on the Wii, mainly because they make shitty games haha. Oh well. That or simply don't give it enough support.

The PS3/360 are great for the industry, they have the ability to force small and crappy developers to leave the industry or be bought out. The wii/DS are allowing small game companies to make shitty games.

If Nintendo cared about the industry they would re-invest their money back into their company, instead they just sit around with billions of dollars doing nothing to make better games, they make crappy games for the most part, just imagine what SMG or Zelda could of been if Nintendo invested more then the bare minimum into their games.

That is the worst business logic I've ever heard. Let's just have big companies make stuff so they can be expensive. You do realize the games you play now comes from companies that used to be "small and crappy"? Or do you really think Rockstar has always made huge GTA games?

So HD graphics and high development costs are good for the industry?

The reason devs make "crappy" games for the Wii is that they believe making a low budget game, on a high userbase of the Wii, will help them recoup losses. But it's proven that the quality games sell better on the Wii than the crappy games.

And don't give me the "non-game" argument (what some of you claissfy Wii Fit and Wii Play and such) because if they aren't games...what are they?

If you look at software sales for this year, 60% (it could be 70%) of the software sales were from third party games. So the "third party games don't sell on the Wii" argument is invalid too. And Wii got quality TP games this year like Z&W, RE4, etc.

@ griffin... so you want all thrid parties to become EA?

So then never complain when EA buys a company?

On topic, my brief analysis:

1) The Wii will see considerably more third party support than it would have if it were another Gamecube, but much less support than it "should" see given its sales and marketshare

2) Some companies resisting the tide will be dashed against the rocks

Sounds about right to me.  Hope GTA outperforms.  Would be sad if take 2 went under.  2k Sports games are the best.

When you lead a company, you're supposed to be open and as unbiased as possible. When all the obvious evidence shows the success of the Wii/DS. Admit your mistakes and adapt. CEO aren't paid to be in denial...

@Kasz216, i have never complained when EA bought a company, they can buy them all for all i care.

@TWRoO, do i want all to be like EA, no, but to have big companies like EA is not all that bad.

@Mancandy, yes i do realize that games i play now came from small companies, but most of them have been bought out, which is great, if Nintendo would buy some of these companies i think it would be better for the industry. And i know all about Rockstar, they have been my fav company since they started.

@soriku, i don't even know how to respond to you, you are talking about stuff that i never even mentioned.

@Bod, A certain amount of small companies can't hurt but when most of the games coming out are made by crappy small guys then they need to leave or be bought out.

He is not refusing to believe the Wii's success. His points are entirely valid.

Successful marketing of a novelty product does not constitute a revolution, and casual gamers will not remain for the long haul like the hardcore. That's just common sense.

It's a good thing that not all developers are blindly following the money. It shows they have a little thing called integrity.
