MS officially claimed that 360 won 2011 globally and Sony has yet to refute that statement? shouldn't that tell you that MS is probably speaking the truth?

What this means is the 360 is under tracked in Europe while PS3 is overtracked there. If the 360 sold the same numbe of units as PS3 did from VGChartz estimates, than that change alone would have 360 ahead of PS3 by over 500k in 2011.

sony hardly ever boast about sales with the ps3. they used to do it before in the ps2 days but not really anymore.

Its hard to boast about sales when you are in last place still.

If ms was wrong, sony or nintendo would of said something. seeing as neither have I see no reason to take forum specultaion over something from a company representative who will be held accountable by his statements since he represents the company.

Wow, this is getting interesting. Can't wait how its "end".

Some people are still undecided about who won 2011, even Reasonable who's word I would take over anyone else's.

But doesn't VGC say that the PS3 won by 300k, and NPD say that the Xbox 360 was 900k units more overtracked than the PS3, suggesting that it won by 1.2m?

Am I somewhere on the right lines?

its getting amazing the meltdowns hehe im loving it. Ps3 fans thinking 360 has like 3M Consoles on Shelves (yeah right) and 360 fans thinking MS Sold 66M not Shipped hehe Well i believed last one as well until NPD haha

The situation as I understand it is:

a- VG numbers show PS3 winning (I think with the numbers you indicate but not sure)

b - MS clearly said they were number 1 in US (which is correct) and seemed to claim number 1 worldwide (but only verbally so far as I know and in a far less clear manner)

c) MS posted some numbers that could be sold to consumer or sold to retail and there is no clear statement of which (although IGN comments imply sold to consumer but don't totally clarify this IMHO)

d) December NPD was out of alignment with VG numbers for the region for December prompting adjustments

e) with reference to d) above I'm not sure if all adjustments are in or if the situation is still fluid.

So in short I personally feel like I've got a car that has three fuel displays and all three are showing a different level so I don't know which one is right.

Your summary seems right based on what I've seen but again I'm not sure I've seen all the numbers driving the confusion.

Actually thinking about it I feel like Drake in the hallucination sequences in Uncharted 3.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

a) Yes, I was following Seece's thread, VGC said PS3 has won by 300k. I don't know if these VGC numbers people are referring to are the ones in Seece's thread or ones that were adjusted at a later date.

b) + c) Microsoft said there are 66m Xbox users (then told IGN that they meant sold). If sold means SOLD then that means that VGC is undertracking by about 2.4m and I'm guessing that means NPD is undertracking by about 3.6m. They could have meant shipped but that still means that 2.4m - 3.6m 360's are sitting on store shelves right now, which I'm guessing is highly unlikely.

d) + e) Gotcha. I have no idea what the NPD sales are, I'm just adding or subtracting their differences from the VGC numbers, hopefully that's still fairly accurate.

I know how you feel, absolute confusion, I never really cared about sales until now, what a bad time to join in.

Just a note before I start this article, the US numbers for the PS3 are estimates, as we haven’t gotten any hard numbers for it, but they shouldn’t be that far off.  I will update them when we get the full picture from NPD.

With NPD totals, VGC has the 360 overtracked by 1.26M in the US (the 360‘s best market).  We also have the PS3 overtracked by ~330K (US is a pretty good market for the PS3, but definitely not its best).  This puts the new gap, with the recent adjustments, to ~990K in favor of the PS3.  However, MS (or more specifically Steve Ballmer) stated they were #1 in HW sales for 2011 at CES.  I think we have one of three possibilities here.

1.  The PS3 is INCREDIBLY overtracked in EU (unlikely) and/or the 360 is INCREDIBLY undertracked there (unlikely).  I say unlikely because EU is “PS country.”  It’s also up ~8.5% YOY in Japan.  So I think it would be hard for it to be so undertracked in EU, when we have it relatively flat in one of its best regions (its actually down ~0.2%).  The 360 is down, as well, but by ~6.4%.  So I think the best the 360 could do is be down by the same amount as the PS3 (again, this is basically “PS country”).  This would make it undertracked by ~73K, which is still not enough to overcome the gap.

2.  Steve got excited, and in announcing the 66+ million sold, he was including shipments from the first couple of weeks in January.  This is definitely a possibility, however, I think the more likely possibility is…

3.  MS decided to change the criteria for selling #1 WW.  If you remember, around the time they first made the claim, they also clarified that they meant actual retail sales and not shipment numbers.  I think they may have changed it from being about retail sales to shipment numbers, without really saying anything about it.  This most likely meant selling consoles to retailers at the same price that they would be when MS drops the price of the 360 this year (so 250GB SKUs for less than $199).  This also means that MS will have an extremely small shipment for Q1 2012.

So, for right now and in terms of retail sales, it looks like the PS3 did keep a gap of  ~990K above the 360 this year.  However, 360 may lay claim to the shipment war.  Of course, we’ll have to wait til shipment numbers from MS and Sony to begin to get the full picture.  Unfortunately, we may even have to wait til shipment numbers for Q1 2012 til it is 100% confirmed.

NoNE because I can smell your biasism through my computer. wow. nice choices. Maybe VGChartz has no clue like they didn't have a clue in the past. UM yea I'm going with that.

NPD is not world wide. ALSO VGCHARTZ GUESS'S IT'S NUMBERS, SO DOES NPD. Um yea they really don't know the real numbers, it's a calculated guess. So who is right? The company that has the numbers or the people trying to guess the numbers. Does anyone remember the past, this place has been a mess. Numbers have been off and it's been by alot.

even if it's shipped that would put 2.4 million on the store shelfs. Like the comment above explains.
