Forums - Gaming Discussion - SE's Wada speaks out again

I might agree with him. Wii hardware is not pushing game development at all . Wii games only push creativity on how to use the Wii controls. This is sad :(

I'm going to be at GDC next month and I'm going to try to figure out what is the general Wii-feel from developers but right now I believe this guy is right. These "casual" Wii games are pretty low quality and they are eating sales from the high quality games. This will eventually hurt the whole industry.

Again though you are going back to the (very) mistaken idea that only casual games can sell on the Wii.  There isn't even an argument for this statement.  The evidence is so strongly against this idea that it's ridiculous.  If he wants to keep making core games, the Wii does not stop him from doing that.  Just as the DS doesn't stop him from doing that.  Again, he started saying this crap about the PSP and the DS months ago too, but now PSP development looks like an afterthought compared to DS development from SE.

Owning and playing a Wii exclusively comes with a price tag in that your not going to find real high end gaming there.

 What?

Lol. Maybe he means 1080p gaming? Otherwise how to justify the usage of the expression "high-end"?

That's why the Wii won't get their full support - because a cinematic experience is important to them, and they *hope* there's still a market for it.

They're not hoping there is still a market for their game type.  There is a market for their game type, and it's big enough to sustain FFXIII.  What they hope for is that the market will change back: that the relatively shrinking share of gamers who want the cinematic game experience will not continue its decline.  They hope the market will reverse itself and their games will significantly increase in popularity.

It's not like Square has to deal with a lack of poplularity or support, but as the market evolves they're moving from one of the big forces out to the fringes a little more.  They're hoping that will reverse itself.

Oh yes, I'm not arguing that at all. I thought it was obvious I meant a viable, future market. Because, certainly, there is no denying that the market is changing, as it always has. Arcade Shooters and Fighting Games were huge once - now they're niece at best. Who knows if the same will happen to the traditional JRPG? I doubt Square will ever run out of customers, but they definitely aren't gaining any, as it is.

As for FF XIII, things are much different now than they were even a year ago. I have no doubt the game will sell, as well as make a profit, but to what extent, especially on the PS3, that depends on what effect the Wii really has had on the market (essentially, are people content with it, or do they need the PS3 for Final Fantasy style titles?).

Hurt the whole industry? An industry which is flooded with FPS and action - kill 'em all titles? Nintendo is saving the industry like they did back in the NES days.

I am really impressed by Soriku. The quality of his posts has surpassed the quality of Dodece's posts, something that I thought would be impossible only a couple of months ago.

Soriku became a valuable forum member. I can't believe it.

Shocking indeed. Soriku actually have a clue about how the industry works. He even has some good insights. Dodece on the other hand is losing it. Watch out when he is surpassed by Leo-j posts in quality.

He calls them non-games bc thats what Nintendo has always called them they arnt games bc they are an invesment, not really a game for the future.

There were a lot of similar comments made by Square Enix about the DS versus the PSP when the 2 handhelds were first released. Looking at their release lists on the systems now though that seems like a joke.

That's because Squaresoft made their fortune on cinematic trend.

PSP and PS3 are heavily "cinematic" systems ...

Hey, look on the bright side, we have Namco to back the Wii up.

-ToS: KoR
-Fragile
-Sword of Legendia
-Baten Kaitos 3

Soriku I would have agreed with Rol if you didn't go right back to believing Surfer Girl.  BK3 may happen, but it's not announced.  For the love of god stop with the Surfer Girl crap.
