Forums - Nintendo Discussion - So it's time to recollect our memories of the Wii

Well for the next 4 months the Wii'll only see 1 new game for its library (That sound thing presented in the last Iwata video), so by now it's pretty sure that most Wii project are either canned or moved to the WiiU. (I'm still waiting for my Fatal Frame Nintendo), so it's time to go back and see all the good things that the Wii bring to us. The console has a quite good catalogue so let's see what games and memories the Wii has for us.

Best games

Surprisingly most of my favorite games of this generation are on the Wii aside of the classics like Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Metroid Prime 3 and Trilogy, Mario Paper, Zelda Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword or the favorites like Mario Kart and New SUper Mario Bros, there're a lot of hidden gems like Little King's Story, Rune Factory Frontier, Tatsunoo Vs Capcom, Madword, Okami, Shiren the Wanderer, A Boy and his Blob, No More Heroes, Mushroom Men, Bloom Blox, Deadly Creatures, Castle of Shikigami III, Muramasa, the Trauma series, Fore Emblem Radiant Dawn, Zack and Wiki,Klonoa, deBlob and Silent Hill Shattered Memories.

The hardware

Yes my launch version of my Wii is still working, it seems like Nintendo still has a reserve of nintendium in their warehouses in fact everything is still working my controls, nunchucks and even the sensor bar no complains here.

The worst

NOA, I've never seen a company having such a successful product and doing everything in their hands to cut all the support for it. So far the company has failed to promote their less know products and is sitting on a huge pile of unreleased games that they simply don't want to bring here, so thanks to Gamestop for ........ that.

The online serivice, the virtual console started has one of the most promising tings in the entire generation and simply didn't work well, plus the entire online structure is really weak, let's see how things evolve in the WiiU.

The WTF

Wii Music; to this very day I still don't get it. Why this thing got a worldwide release in a holiday season? To this day this product is still the mockery for pretty much all the gaming community.

"Wii Fit was going to destroy gaming", nope it just revived the exer-gaming genre dead since the 80's, now we got excercise games in pretty much every console.

i remember when i got my wii. i stood in line at target for 22 hours and then i got home and just went to sleep. i didnt care to play it, i was just going to do that later. i just wanted to make sure i got it the second it came out. and i did. it still works too. of course. i was playing it just a few hours ago. i like how nintendo is the best and how they have won 3 console generations. pretty awesome.

Ah, my precious Wii. I remember when I got you Christmas morning. Putting my whole family under a spell and causing many hours to be wasted on Mario Kart and SSB:B.

It still works, though it's been making loud noises lately (probably because I leave it on too much). Did have an unfortunate incident with the original corded sensor bar, though.

I have to agree with Virtual Control thing. VC started as wet dream, and ended in Blue Balls. So many games not released that have to popularity to should have been priority.

SSBB, twlighlight Princess, Galaxy, Pokemon Battle revolution, Fire Emblem, Pokemon Rumble and NSMBW will definitely be my most memorable moments with Wii

I really don't get the hate the VC gets. The Hanobi festival has given us releases of gems like Ogre Battle 64, Super Mario RPG, Sin and Punishment, Chrono Trigger, FFVI that all originally missed out on PAL territories; for that I will be eternally grateful. Also I find the games cheap too, rather that paying multiple times the amount for getting the games off ebay.

While I would've like to have seen the likes of Seiken Densetsu 3 and Earthbound/Mother 2 localised at long last, the VC is for me is a fantastic achievement and deserves much applause.

Hardware
I really digged the controls of the Wii when I first saw it, the IR + nunchuck design clicked for me and it's the reason why I bought a console after two generations of missing out.

Games
The new experiences started with games like Trauma Center and Zack & Wiki which used the controls in imaginative ways. Had first full plate of 3D Mario later that year with the awesome Super Mario Galaxy. Later had my first Wii FPS with Metroid Prime 3, the balance board We Ski & Snowboard, the inexplicable Munchables and our dance craze started round this time with We Cheer. During the next years I got my fill from cheap old games, music/party games, etc; moving to the gyro controls of motion plus and its games.

Worst
Finding out about regions, localizations, etc. Thought that by this generation things would be more global.

WTF
Wii losing steam thanks to its game release schedule.

My favorite game was Rune Factory Frontier, it was the first game I played for over 100 hours (although DQ9 on DS would later beat that, and also be the first and only game I played over 200 and 300 hours). I had many others.

The greatest Wii memories were the social gaming memories, playing with University friends with Wii Sports and Wario Ware. Later playing Just Dance in my first Just Dance Party, drinking alcohol, and just having situations where 4 would play, and 10+ more wanting to play; and I have been to many Just Dance parties since - and it is the only real true party game I have ever played (not geek rock and parties with that banging plastic noise and rock music, but parties with girls and champagne, and dancing to cool music).

I don't agree about the Virtual Console, I thought it was a great addition, and I got most of my favorite classics off of it. Why would you not want or like that? It had the best lineup of classic games of any platform ever.

My disappointments were Metroid Prime 3 (the Balrog ripoff scene seemed cool, and people kept praising Retro - but I found the game a huge bore), Madworld, Zack and Wiki, and No More Heroes (at least it had awesome boss battles and some cool story stuff, but I hated everything else which was the other 95% of the game). These are all games I was hyped for and paid full for them, and didn't like them.

Ending on a good note - Wii Fit really surprised me, I played it a lot and its expansion - I felt it was superior to its copy cats (you know, Wii Fit actually works, the other games I played were terribly unresponsive, buggy, and annoying). Just Dance really took its place in the long run, and is a more fun form of exercise - mostly because it is played with friends and alcohol makes it more fun.

Overall, the Wii is the first Nintendo home console I played a lot since SNES. The N64 had some gems, but there were more good games on PSX by far. When a drought occurred on the Wii, it was when Nintendo didn't release games for a while, but other companies released plenty - on N64 a drought was when no one released any games (I am talking absolute zero games)  - seriously, it was like a full 2.5 years before the N64 even had 40 games on it and PSX had over 800. Gamecube was kind of a PS2 junior, it had a few games on it that stood out, but was overall a filler console just so Nintendo could keep the tiniest bit of relevance in the home console market while they survived off of GBA and DS. Wii sort of marked that return to the home console industry for Nintendo, after being out of the game for 8 years (Ocarina of Time was kind of the last of Nintendo's greatness on home console until the Wii launch). I can hardly wait for Wii U, and I look forward to it because I probably won't need any other home consoles next generation because of it.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Wii is probably my favourite console this gen. But what started out with immense first party titles the first 2 years (SMG, Zelda TP, Wii Sports, Wii Fit, SSBB, MK, MP3 etc...), ended with really more lackluster games especially this year with the exception of Zelda. I still enjoyed it the most though out of all my systems and still play a lot of these games up to now. It will remain with me as a fond memory especially for reviving the platformers again which probably puts the wii up there with the N64 adn SNES for me.

Unfortunately it didn't get the finale it deserves, but still looking back it has one of the best libraries out there in terms of diversity. Also I do believe that motion controls has changed the way for the future, and it has defined how the next generation will look like. So well done Nintendo for taking such a huge risk, and I'm glad it worked out for you. You have given me great memories and probably revived the gamer in me this generation. Well done!

Oh WII. I got one shortly after my PS3, I actually took my WIi with me to Iraq, it was small. The hardware, is more reliable of the three, but I had the system crash on me a few times and I just had to replace my nunchuck. I was loving the motion control, but after a few rounds of boxing in Wii Sports, I saw the inaccuracies and overall non-polish of the tech. I still think Motion+ should have been there day one. And it is essentially a slightly more powerful GC, sure it made is cheaper but, in the long run, it missed out on some great games.

Speaking of games, im not going to get into the library, since im a multiplat guy and whatever Wii missed i would have bought elsewhere. I did like Tvs.C, wish more people bought it, so the online would not be a wasteland. SW Force Unleashed was good fun, Muramasa was good, DKC, Mario Galaxy 1&2 were good. GE was great, just got Zelda havent even cracked it open yet. HOD Overkill, hilarious. THere were a few games I like, wish there were more.
Online. Sucks, there really is no other way to put it, its just bad. THe one good thing they had (VC) got worse and worse. We still dont know why?? Were people not supporting it? Or are the rumors that Ninty sabotaged it to give some attention to there horrible WiiWare true?? I hope not
