Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why I'm sure the Wii U will release at $250 to $300

YOu can quote me if I'm right or wrong in this when they announce the price(Which Im sure someone will)

When Nintendo announced the 3DS, they said "this is A LOT more expensive than a DS and we dont expect to lose money on this". The DS was 150 at that point, just like the Wii which is at 150, and in some cases 100. and reggie said the same thing last week for the Wii u.

The 3ds was more powerful than the psp, but not by too much. Just like the WiiU, which will be more powerful than the 360/ps3, but not by too much.

People were worried that the 3d screen would increase the price, just like the Wii U with it's touch screen controller.

As you can see, the Wii U is almost exactly the same as the 3DS price delema. Except this time, people are assuming a ridicoulous price point of 600 dollars  for the Wii u lol. I think with how cheap touch screens are nowadays, and the pricing of both the ps3 and 360, a 250 to 299 price point is not too far off. And I think Nintendo knows that price truely matters, and wont be making as big as profit as they did with the 3DS. So I guess in a way, this will better for nintendo, because people are expecting a much higher price, but it will be much lower than that.

So those are my thoughts, what do you think?

Im not sure... 250-299 is quite low for a console 3-4x the power of the 360 and ps3...

Yay!!!

Honestly, it could be $249 and I still wouldn't care about this system. I think the big N is making steps in the wrong direction as far as catering to their main audience.

And that would go along with the whole, "disposable income" quote.

Yep I agree 499 or around that will be the price tag. People will make the jump, a lot of wii fans out there.

I think it'll be $299.99 even with a game included.

People seem to forget inflation! If $250-299 was a great starting price last gen this time around that low of a price would be even sweeter. A $600 launch PS3 would need to launch around $750 next year to "cost" the same.

Hopefully you get it...

It'll be $199. source, http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=138172&page=1

I could see it either being $399, or $499 but then quickly dropped to $399 after the first Christmas.

Those consoles are also 5-6 years old, and the Wii U won't be including bleeding-edge technology in its hardware like Sony did with Blu-Ray for the PS3 (which standalone players costed anywhere from $700 and up when they first launched in 2006).  360 was also extremely powerful for its time, being the first console to do HD graphics and rivaling any top of the line PC rig in 2005, so at $399 it was really a steal when it launched.

I agree with the OP, but for different reasons.  If it weren't for the tablet controller, Nintendo could easily release the console at $250 and still make money.  No way the tablet controller adds more than $100 in costs (and that's on the extreme end of the price spectrum), so realistically tack on another $50 or so and include some software that shows off the system's capabilities the way Wii Sports (which began life as an E3 tech demo) did for the original Wii, and presto, there's your $299 price point.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

I think there is a good chance it will cost $300. $400 tops.

I'm personally hoping for $400 since I don't like when consoles are too cheap at launch. I like to watch how they target different market segments with price drops, seeing sales spikes from price drops, analyzing the effects and so on.

I also think the next Xbox will cost $400 in Nov 2013.
