Forums - Gaming Discussion - 2 questions about SONY...

1) Sony will still come on top since Asia and other regions are always under tracked, they lost in the Holiday Season because M$ has succeeded in creating Kinect as a post Wii sensation among the casual folks, Move has zero appeal to the casual and is a failure from Sony's part, expect Eyetoy HD in the near future.

2) Other business of Sony apart from Vaio, gaming and movies are failures,

- Sony Ericsson is slow in implementing Android compares to other manufacturers like Samsung (Xperia X1 was a Windows Mobile, and their Vivaz, Sendo were Symbian, while Samsung and HTC already bring out tons of androids, their first Android X10 seems to stay forever in 1.6 while market already flooded with 2.1 and above)

- Bravia 3D is beautiful and all, but LG can bring out SMART 3D TV into the market in half the price, in this kind of market, it would be crazy to sell electronics at twice the price of other manufacturers

- Kutaragi fucked up the Walkman brand in the Ipod era, recently there is a resurgence of Walkman, but it only sells because it's cheaper than Ipod

- Music business is near to dead, they had Britney and Backstreet Boys in the last decade, and now only Beyonce, both Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga belong to other labels. They spend a great fortune in buying BMG in this downloading era and I cant see how they area going to recoup all that money.

As for SONY sustaining it,SONY is a pretty big company so they have alot of money from the past and also it borrows if it needs more and because it has such a great brand, lenders loan money easily. if sony continues to get these kinds of rating llike state in the article below , lenders will not lend so easily like you stated.

i know but the OP didn't ask for future but what has already happened

People dont forget this little tidbit of information. Playstation division isnt profiting anymore.

it's the division not the product in question. PS is lumped in with the consumer electronic's division, so there is no way of knowing unless there's a seporate report breaking down each product.

as noted before, yes the price cut(which is mentioned in the artical) is part of the loses, but it says nothing about the system or PS brand taking a lose.

PS is in the division that's costing Sony the most money, yet the PS brand is profiting.

You see MS has their division which is mostly made up of Xbox 360 and Windows Phone 7. So when we see their numbers, its pretty clear that their mostly from Xbox. You dont have people saying " They only profited because Windows Phone was carrying the Xbox brand". Thats just not done lol.

Sony on the other hand over the years has lumped the Playstation brand in with an increasing number of different products. The article I mentioned showed the division, a large division BUT included the Playstation brand nonetheless, posted hundreds of millions of losses.

Sony refuses to divulge purely PS numbers and continues to lump them in this large division. I speculate that its cause they can mask their PS losses in a crowd of other products so it will be hard to tell whats really losing money.

Oh and I saw your link. Says Sony PS brand brings in 13.4 billion every year....in revenue. I wanted to know net profit. Revenue is good and dandy but it could lead to a net loss for all we know.

agreed on some points. hey they could be masking PS3 losses, but we'd be better of saying the PS3 makes very little profit v saying it's a huge hole.

you may not know me that well but i hate speculation, it's like betting your car can go 300 miles per hr. but the speedometer says your top speed is 298.

okay, some points to consider:

  • your article is about revenue, not profit. It doesn't prove anything.
  • The Playstation divison is Bravia TVs, Playstation brand and Vaio. Vaio was the one being profitable.
  • The price cut made Sony bleed another $500,000,000 - That is why nobody understood why Sony did it. Market share is irrelevant this late into a generation anyway. Analysts and rating agencies made Sony feel it.
  • Overall The losses of the Playstation division (even before they megred with Bravia and Vaio) should be in the 5 billion USD range by now since the release of the PS3. This is with a profitable PSP and a profitable PS2. Now add R&D costs for the PS3 and you get the idea what kinde of financial nightmare the PS3 really is for Sony. I think 7 billion USD loss (5 billion reported + PS2 profits since 2006 + PSP profits since 2006 + R&D costs before 2006) is an conservative guess.

Good night. Merry Xmas!

the price cut is not sony's cause for losses

and $7b is PS3's loss since release(remeber PS3 loss not PS division's loss, the division didn't lose that much as other things such as PS2,PSP,Software sales covered it and its around $4-4.5b)

more losses are recouped by blu-ray sales and PS3 profiting from Q1 2010

the price cut is blamed for the losses by sony!
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/38323/PS3_Price_Drop_Leads_To_Sony_Q2_Losses.php

the secon paragraph is basically what I just said. To calculate the PS3 loss you check the numbers. 5 billion USD reported add the profits by the PS2 since release of the PS3 add the profits by the PSP since release of the PS3 and add R&D costs before the PS3 even released. That is why I said 7 billion is an optimistic guess.

PS3 isn't profiting in a big way since Q1 2010! For the whole 2010 the profits were 450,000,000 USD.
http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/10q4_sonypre.pdf

And because of the price cut, these profits are gone again so that we might look at +/- 0 for 2010 and 2011 so far. And no, BluRay is not generating more money than the PS3 burns.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Love how people call americans Sheep for loving an american concevied product be it Microsoft , Apple & be that they were assembled in some cheap labor country
seems unfair that Americans are called sheep for loving american products , but japanesses are called patriot or someother BS when they by thier jap products.

who calls america sheep

even if they are called, they are not called for purchasing xbox or iphone but because american media and entertainment buisness makes alot of them live that way

so whats the reason Japanese refuse to buy american products then? Must be in the water?

If countries treat us this way, maybe we should treat them the same as well

they buy alot of apple products

just because they don't buy xbox so you group everybody in and also if one country doesn't buy it,then you can't blame all countries

the country isn't doing anything,if xbox would appeal to conservative Japanese culture then they would buy
