What happened to Square (Enix)? They used to put out phenomenal games in rapid succession:

1987 - Final Fantasy
1988 - Final Fantasy II
1990 - Final Fantasy III
1991 - Final Fantasy IV
1992 - Final Fantasy V
1994 - Final Fantasy VI
1997 - Final Fantasy VII (longest wait to date)
1999 - Final Fantasy VIII
2000 - Final Fantasy IX
2001 - Final Fantasy X
2002 - Final Fantasy XI
2006 - Final Fantasy XII
2009 - Final Fantasy XIII
2010 - Final Fantasy XIV

Seriously, most iterations were released within a year or two from one another, yet now everything's spaced out and at this rate we won't get VsXIII till 2013, XV 2014 at the earliest.

The hell....and 8-10 are some of the best games ever and they made them all with only a year between each release.

I don't know what the reason is but maybe SQEX should hire more staff for each team so the games have a larger workforce and therefore quicker dev cycle.

They stayed true to the same core mechanics and improved the game system after each installation. It wasnt until after X that they decided to go on a "New" path which involved reworking the gameplay formula which is why we've seen FFXI (Online) , FFXII (MMORPG like non online action RPG) , FFXIII (Somewhat turn based but with MMORPG like strategies , i.e tank, healer, attacker), FFXIV (whole new online gaming system) etc..

I'd say they started on their new path with FFX. That was the first game to get rid of the world map.

True true, X was the first to have a huge amount of changes to it:

-New summon system
-Less equipment slots
-Lack of a world Map
-No airship travel (Manual like the older ffs)
-No EXP lving system

It did have an EXP levelling system, but it wasn't levels, rather individual stats, and gave you choice of how to develop your characters

Yeah the sphere grid system, I meant by EXP leveling as in you gain a certain amount of exp and it shows your character having a ranked level (i.e. lv 59).

The Sphere grid system was unique and imo good, FFXIII's system is similar which is why I liked FFXIII's game system but it just didnt feel like a FF game to me lol.

Well FFX was my first FF game, so I didn't really have a problem with XIII all, and have in fact enjoyed every FF that I have played (IV, VII, IX, X, X-2, XII, XIII) in my backtracking using my PSP. FF is a series that changes a lot, but from what I have read, FF XIII-2 is more traditional than the games that have gone before it

Ah, I started FF when I was like 5 or 6 years old, with FFIV as my first o.o on the SNES.

I went from

IV -> V -> VI -> IX -> X -> VII -> VIII -> I -> II -> III -> XII -> XIII

XD

XIII was good, I can understand why people hate it cause its more linear than the others but I still like it and still playing it.

What an odd order! I plan to get VIII on PSN and play on Vita, but I just haven't got round to it yet

Yeah, I still put a good 30 hours into it, though I never got round to doing the extra stuff and it is less that I played XII and X for, but it is still a good amount for a game

I'm okay with this.
