Liege Grenade Attack: At Least Four Dead Including Gunman After Explosives Hurled In Belgian City

At least four people have died and 75 have been injured after a man fired shots and threw grenades in a crowded town square in Liège, Belgium.

The grenades exploded near to a Christmas market, injuring dozens and sending people running and screaming from the scene.

A 15-year-old boy died "on the spot", police said in a short press conference. The gunman, A 17-year-old boy and a 65-year-old woman were also killed. There are further unconfirmed reports from medical staff that a 15-month-old baby girl was the fourth victim of the gunman.

A further 75 people are known to have been injured in the attack. All the wounded were sent to the six hospitals in the region, mainly the Citadelle Hospital it was reported on local radio.

The gunman, who was from Liège, has been named 33-year-old Nordine Amrani by the police. Officials said that he was on his way for police questioning when he launched the attack.

The man reportedly climbed onto a rooftop near to the Place Saint-Lambert, from where he fired shots and threw explosives onto a busy shopping street.

Amrani was armed with grenades, a handgun and also a machine gun, police said. There were more grenades on his person when he was found.

The attacker had spent some time in prison for drug and sex offences and was known to the authorities.

The newspaper Sudpresse said Amrani was convicted in 2008 to 58 months in prison for possession of weapons and for growing cannabis as part of a gang. It was not possible for The Huffington Post UK to confirm those details independently.

"There was just one assailant," police said. "He was acting alone. ... He was not trying to run away."

The first info were pretty chaotic (I'm belgian) they were talking about an attack from a terrorist group... In the end, it appears it was just one single bastard who did this for some fucked up reason we don't know yet... What's up with some people's minds, really



I regret how we're babied and brought up to believe life is so meaningful and so fantastic when we're young children, only to see more and more every day how fucked up, pointless, and unimportant our lives are in the grand scheme of things. Sigh.
