Microsoft: No Nintendo, Xbox is More Popular

Seemingly in disagreement with Nintendo's claims of one week ago, Microsoft issued a release late Tuesday citing data from The NPD Group that Xbox, not GameCube, had the best-selling console launch ever. Moreover, Microsoft states that "Halo" for Xbox is outselling "Luigi's Mansion," which Nintendo had crowned the most popular launch title to date. According to NPD, gamers are purchasing 2.4 games per Xbox sold, as opposed to 1.9 with each GameCube.

"Xbox sold out as soon as we launched, and we're selling systems as fast as we can produce them. More than 100,000 units a week are being delivered to retailers," said Microsoft's Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach. Similarly, Nintendo has planned for weekly shipments of 125,000 additional GameCubes through the holidays. Both companies expect to ship close to 1.5 million units by the end of the year.

But at this point it may be impossible to deem a clear victor. The reports rely heavily on market data polled from select retailers, not hard numbers. Whatever the final tally may be however, it is clear both Microsoft and Nintendo pulled off record-breaking sales despite a dismal economic forecast. And perhaps most importantly, gamers cannot get enough of either console.

But in the end, Nintendo managed to make profit; unlike Microsoft, they lost 4 billion with the xbox. Xbox production was ceased after just four years on the market.

Would you have really expected Microsoft to turn a profit with its first-ever console? Knowing the financial challenge of breaking into the console market, taking a loss was required in order to gaina foothold for the successive generation. And look how that turned out. Also, your point about Microsoft ceasing production after four years is also irrelevent; if anything, it's even more impressive that Xbox outsold Gamecube when it had even less time on the market.

That said, I own both consoles and love them both.

Anyways, both consoles deserved more sales!

The truth is that neither of them were that popular.

Gamecube FTW!

Best controller ever made vs the worst controller ever made. It was an easy decider.

At least a little bit. If Sony, as well as many others, and Nintendo were able to
turn a profit with their first console, then why couldn't Microsoft. But I guess that was the price for creating a powerfull console (at the time) with PC-like hardware. It was a cool console nonetheless-both were.

lol neither side had any idea of what was to come XP

PS: I LOVE blasts from the past! :D

Weren't these two systems about the same in terms of sales? I just remember not really being excited for either. Coming from a guy who still plays GC games on the Wii and had two GC's. Still I was not that excited about it.

the xbox came in out hugely ahead with a masculine 24 million, where as the gamecube ended in third with a pathetic and childish 22 million
