Forums - Sony Discussion - CES 2008: Sony Lists MGS4 as 'Exclusive'

This is very import to nail down before 'reviews' for the game are done.

Sites like 1Up,EGM,Gamespot etc need to know either:

1) It's PS3 exclusive so they can trash the game with 7 or 8/10s with 'didn't live up to the hype'

or

2) There is some far off downgraded 360 port coming and give the game 9-9.5/10s with 'teh superior 360 version' getting 9.6/10s later on.

This everybody knows .

If Microsoft really wants it, trust me they'll get it, they shelled out 50 million just for exclusive GTA content and I think it will take less to persuade Konami.

That is such a common error among 360 fans. Microsoft didn't give Take Two 50mil for exclusive content, they loaned Take Two 50mil for exclusive content.

That was done with MS/Take Two's expectation that the downloadable content will make more profit then 50mil, if however it does not, then Take Two have to pay Microsoft back for the balance. Basically, Microsoft only advanced Take Two money that they would already get anyway for the extra downloadable content, so Microsoft are not losing any money at all.

And if anyone thinks that Microsoft are going to throw big dollars at Konami for a year later port you are in dreamland. Microsoft will never get their money back in sales. MGS4 will do it's damage in 08, fall 09 is useless, MGS4 will be old news come that time. Especially since Sony have already announced that they will be bundling MGS4 with PS3's.

Heh, nice info about the Take Two payment. If they sell 5 million copies of $10 add-on content, the payment is done.

Konami also has a deal with Sony to produce the MGS movie, so there is likely at least a gentleman's agreement there.

If you want to play MGS4, just get a PS3.  It's also a great blu-ray player and that format is looking good, heh.

It seems that every console is allowed to have 3rd party exclusives, except the PS3. With near 9 million consoles sold you'd think people would get off it already. The 360 had exclusives when it had less consoles sold, so why can't the PS3. Heck, even the Xbox 1 had exclusives and it sold less than half of the PS2!!
Exclusives don't seem to be selling well on the PS3, despite quality such as Ratchet and Clank, as opposed to the 360.

Yet people still believe that the lack of user base will prevent exclusivity. Not true!! If that were true MGS Acid would be on the DS not the PSP...yeah...I went there!

Selling to 1/3 of a 30 million user base is > than all of a user base which is less than 9 million.  Plus MGS Acid production costs couldn't even be close to MGS 4 costs, requiring less sales from an already larger user base.

@WEWdeadeye

Agreed who cares by now. Best case scenario for the 360 is that it will be released a year later and have about 1/5 the sales of the PS3 version, and everyone will say that it flopped on the 360. Konami and Kojima I am sure are loving the rumors as all it is doing is bringing more hype to this game. The hype is the only reason why most 360 users even want a day and date release of MGS, and solely for a bragging point in the 360 vs PS3 fanboy wars.

I have talked to a few buddies who got PS3's over the past couple of months and MGS4 isn't even on their radar, as most haven't even heard of it. One of my other buddies lost all interest in the series after MGS2. I don't know if you would consider these guys casuals but they definitely don't spend their free time on gaming related websites.

As far as me. It is one of the biggest reasons I purchased a PS3. I disagree that MGS3 was lacking compared to the other two. I think it and MGS were far better than MGS2. The sales for MGS3 suffered due to the confusing/crazy ending of MGS2 which turned a lot of folks off to the series. No matter though the hype is bringing everybody back and then some. I have seen some people post on other sites "how they can't wait to play this game, but should they try and play the other three first if they haven't played them before?" and other posts to that effect.

However if it did release a year later on the 360 I would at least rent it for achievements alone.

Some of you guys are acting like Sony didn't pay Konami to keep this game exclusive. As if Microsoft is the only company capable of persuading 3rd parties to get a game exclusive. There's an extremely good chance that Sony paid Konami off when they were leaning towards multiplatform.

good for ps3, never liked MGS (or spy games in general), so its good ps3 is keeping it

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Game trailers-Halo 3 only dissapointed the people who wanted to be dissapointed.

Bet with Harvey Birdman that Lost Odyssey will sell more then Blue dragon did.

I couldn't really care if MGS4 is exclusive or not (though I'd like to see some fanboy drama). I don't have a PS3 or 360 and I'm pretty neutral to Metal Gear as a series.

That said, people seem to keep wrapping themselves under this blanket of delusion that Kojima actually has some say on the matter. Konami decides what platform(s) MGS4 will go to, the most Kojima can do is whine and threaten not to cooperate on a port but he's not actually required in any way, they can just bitch slap him and port it.

People forget that Kojima didn't want MGS2 on Xbox and it happened anyway...

Claude tackles MGS4 exclusivity!

Some common excuses I hear:

Excuse #1: "But Kojima/Konami/Sony said it was exclusive!"

And? What are they supposed to say? It's not exclusive? If they haven't announced it for other consoles then by industry standards it's an exclusive. And they're going to continue to refer to it as an exclusive until the very day that they announce it to be multiplatform (if that day ever happens).

Excuse #2: "Xbox 360 can't handle Kojima's vision! MGS4 is not meant for it!"

Perhaps, but PS3 can't handle Konami's bills. This is perhaps the most expensive game Konami has ever make and they're putting it on a console that hasn't sold nearly as much as everyone had expected it to before launch. Judging by the fact that these multiplat rumors are being ignited by some Konami employees doesn't help the situation either.

Excuse #3: "Xbox 360 would explode if it tried to play MGS4/it needs 5 discs LOL/RROD LMAO!!1"

Yeah, keep telling yourself that.

and we all know how that went

I have dejavus from the last generation about the exclusivity of Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube.....Let me remind you what Mikami-San said at that time:"Resident Evil 4 is a nintendo exclusive on Gamecube, if it will ever go to PlayStation 2 i will cut off my head". Reality check after two months before its release on the Gamecube, Capcom made the break of exclusivity and announced RE4 for Ps2. The result lots of nintendo fanboys commit seppuku that evening, and others was looking for Mikami to claim his head and to uphold his oath. Well the same thing is going to be here as well bet my 2 cents. The game is ready they pospone its release for no particular reason and the konami representatives bitching out about developing costs. Sure port on X360 no for the pleasure of the fanboys but for the CA$H simple as that.
