Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Which Mario Kart is the best?

Mario Kart's finest hour?

Super Mario Kart (Snes) 23 11.27%

Mario Kart 64 (N64) 41 20.10%

Mario Kart Super Circuit (GBA) 2 0.98%

Mario Kart Double Dash!! (NGC) 27 13.24%

Mario Kart DS (NDS) 19 9.31%

Mario Kart Wii (PSP) 46 22.55%

Mario Kart 7 (3DS) 46 22.55%

Total:204

Of the games I have played enough to rate against each other fairly:

MK:Wii >>> MK:DD >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> MK64

I have played a little of both SMK and MK:DS.
DS I would expect to fit in about 5 or 6 arrows below DD... though with my limited time I haven't had to experience online snakers.
SMK I think would fit halfway between DD and 64... mainly because it is now dated rather than substandard.

I haven't played SS or 7 at all, so can't comment.

I'm more of a racer than a fighter, so I don't have a huge interest in battle mode. But I view MK:Wii and MK64 battle modes to be the best, MK64 being the best executed, but Wii is saved by having online battle mode and more players and the coin thing (MK:Wii would have been leagues ahead if up to 4 teams were allowed instead of just 2)
SMK battle mode was also good, most of the 40-50 minutes I spent on the game were spent in battle mode.
Double Dash battle mode was atrocious.

Around the Network

I haven't had the chance to play Mario Kart 7 so I can't vote for it. However, I've play the others and I must say I absolutely love Mario Kart Wii. My friends and I have had so much fun with that game! My next would be Double Dash. If it had online then I think Double Dash would have been my favorite.

I'm a fan of MK Wii. It's the online that makes this game, for me. DS is my second favorite.

My least favorite is the N64 version. I liked the new powerslide mechanic and the 4-player but the rubber band AI ruined the game for me. You could screw an opponent so badly that they would go for a jump and end up half a track behind you--and suddenly they will start moving at super speed!! It felt pretty slow, too.

The original (along with SF2--bought them on the same day) was the first Snes game I ever owned. I bought it before I even had the console! It was amazing in its day. I haven't played in since probably 1996, though. Spent so many times perfecting my skill, racing time trials against my brother's ghost data, and fighting my cousin in Battle Mode. To be honest, I haven't enjoyed a version of MK battle mode since the Snes game. Probably due to a lack of people willing to play it with me. Can't say it's the best, though. Gotta go back and see how well its aged.

One big thing I have against Mario Kart DS is snaking.  It pretty much ruined online play if you didn't snake and faced someone that did.  I refused to learn how to do it so I was destined to lose if facing someone that did.  Now it was fun as hell when everyone didn't snake.  I hope there isn't any way at all to snake on MK7.  Didn't they also take off the design your own decal after some sexual type images started popping up on user's karts (penis, boobs, etc..)?  It has been so long and I no longer own the game so I am not sure (plan on rebuying it at some point).

I know I'm probably in the minority here but, I go with DD!! when I played it with my brother back when we first bought it we had a TON of fun! The graphics are close to MKWii, it had the two people Kart's, and some awesome items :D

You fucked your poll up!!! lol @ Mario Kart Wii (PSP)

My bad.  I meant to put Mario Kart Wii (PS3).  Honest mistake.

--Oh, just saw your other post.  All you had to do to snake (aka: drafting in the world of racing) is follow the car in front of you for a few seconds.  You'll get a speed boost.  It happens in real life racing, too.  I found out about it by watching Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. And it's back in MK7.  Sorry :(

And with that, I'm out for the night.  My GF is like Unicron when it comes to my free time.  My last day off from work until Sunday and she sucked it up.  I still haven't given the new Xbox dash a try, yet.  Barely tried the new 3DS features or posted today, either.  Oh well.  Peace.

My nostalgia glasses are telling me to vote for the N64 version, though (don't kill me) the only other version I've played is the Wii one.

Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League

Nah, that isn't "snaking" in Mario Kart DS.  Snaking was exploiting the mini turn turbos (turbos you get when drifting around a corner).  So basically the person would be going back and forth (like a snake) mini turbo-ing the entire course.  What you described is drifting which isn't the same as using a turn turbo.  Perhaps I confused you when I said drift turbo; I meant the turbos you get around turns.

Mario Kart 64

Has anything introduced since improved Mario Kart?

Yes, custom GPs for four (console: Wii) to eight players (handheld: DS, 7). Racing for points is much more exciting than simple Vs. races.

My order:

  • 1. Wii - Custom GPs for up to four players, no snaking.
  • 2. Double Dash!! - Finally fixed the points system in GP mode, but sadly no four player GPs.
  • 3. 7 - Builds on the Wii game, but is on a handheld which greatly limits local multiplayer for people like me.
  • 4. Super - The game that started it all.
  • 5. Super Circuit - Introduced ranks for GP mode and came with all 20 SNES tracks on top of the 20 original ones.
  • 6. DS - Despite bringing in a lot of options, snaking ruins the game. It also feels too slow which only encourages snaking.
  • 7. 64 - Rushed to release, lacks polish. Its only saving grace were its four player modes and the N64 coming with four built-in controller ports.

Pretty much exactly how I would list them. Loved MKWii. I have not played 7 yet so I cannot say where it would fall.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

Mario Kart Wii for PSP ?
