Forums - Gaming Discussion - What current-gen games would be considered classics 15-25yrs from now?

As this generation of consoles comes closer and closer to the end of its cycle it would be interesting to know what games people think would be considered true classics 15-25 yrs from now. We are talking about games that would stand the test of time, games that the young generation of gamers at that time would be able to pick up and play and still enjoy, overlooking (what would be then considered) sub-standard graphics and sound, where the gameplay will still be able to hold its own.

These games would have to be able to stand with the games we now consider classics and timeless, such as pac-man, super mario bros, chrono trigger, street fighter 2 and many others. So what games does the vgchartz community think would be the classics of tomorrow  and why? If any at all.

Uncharted 3???

Wii Sports???

Gears of War???

Call of Duty Modern Warfare???

None of them will likely be considered classics; I can't think of a single game this generation that I would like to revisit in 15-25 years.

Does that mean that something went wrong with this generation of games?

Okay. I think there will be numerous games from this generation will be called "classics" in 15-25 Years from now. There is a whole new generation of gamer, just starting to game right now. These gamers will consider Call of Duty 4 to be a classic. These gamers will consider BioShock to be a classic. These gamers will consider World of Warcraft to be a classic.

As for me? A "Classic" game for me right now, would be games I played when I was growing up. A few of them would be...

Super Mario Bros.
Link to the Past.
Metal Gear Solid.
Final Fantasy VII.
Monkey Island.
Baldur's Gate.
Sonic the Hedgehog.

... All games close to my heart. This generation there are very, very few games that I would say are as close to me as the examples I gave above. One such game though, would be Valkyria Chronicles.

So yeah. I'm gonna say Valkyria Chronicles.

There are two cases of games that become 'classics'.

The first case is that of extremely popular games (Pacman, asteroids, duckhunt, tetris...).

The second case is that, despite selling much less, they left a huge impact on a smaller group of people (Monkey Island, Zelda...).

Some games were popular AND left a huge impact (Mario, FF...).

So I think huge selling franchises will be considered classics in the future. CoD, Wii Sports, Kinect, Gears... and a few continuation of sagas of which all games sell gazillions and are considered classics: GT5, GTA IV+V...

The games that will leave an impact over time are more difficult to guess because more perspective is needed. I'm sure that games like MGS4, Skyrim, Mass Effect... will be remembered.

Nothing.

Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2

What?! I can't hear you over all this awsome! - Pyrrhon (Kid Icarus:Uprising)

Final Ultimate Legendary Earth Power Super Max Justice Future Miracle Dream Beautiful Galaxy Big Bang Little Bang Sunrise Starlight Infinite Fabulous Totally Final Wonderful Arrow...FIRE! - Wonder-Red (The Wonderful101)

I really don't think any of them. Games don't age as well now as they did in the 8/16 bit era, I can barely play games from last gen (even from early in this gen like 2005-06) anymore because they look so terrible...and I'm guessing next gen games will look so good that they will make this gen games look awful.

Maybe something unique like Heavy Rain or Catherine (niche). But nothing else really since this gen has been loaded with sequels.
