Forums - Gaming Discussion - Xbox Beats out PlayStation on Google, Bing 2011 Searches

PlaystationLifestyle

With many consumers unable to really tell the difference between this generation’s HD consoles, strong brand recognition is vital to Microsoft and Sony’s success. While the PlayStation brand was once the strongest in the gaming world, it has suffered in recent years, while the Xbox brand has grown.

According to recently released figures from Bing, “Xbox was the most searched consumer electronics product of the year on Bing, beating out PlayStation and Wii as the favorite games console of the year.” PlayStation was the third most searched for consumer electronics product, while the Wii trailed at six.

PlayStation

iPhone 5

iPad

Wii

iPad 2

Nook

Windows Phone 7

Macbook Pro

With Google, the figures are more open as Google Trends shows a more in-depth look at searches:

With Xbox in red, and PlayStation in blue, it’s clear there are more searched for the Xbox, with the spike in PlayStation searches only caused by the hack of the PlayStation Network.

This seems like a somewhat arbitrary way to determine brand recognition, especially given the information we already have access to on this very site.

Who needs sales when you can have searches.

I honestly believe it, the Xbox is doing really fine. But if the source is Bing, and Bing belongs to Microsoft, I won't blame people for questioning the truth in those statistics. Anyway, Google's stats seem to confirm it, Xbox more popular... who've guessed this a few years ago. :o

If you enter ps3 instead of playstation it looks much more similar.

Do the searches for Playstation include searches for ps2, ps3, psp, etc?
Do the searches for Wii include searches for Nintendo, ds, 3ds?
I guess not when iPad and iPad 2 are listed separately? Isn't iPad 1 brand?

@svennoJ

I don't think so. I'll show you a link as I don't know how to upload the chart'

Makes sense, M$ always does a lot better at brand awareness.

I'm surprised, I though Sony fans/presence dominated the web.

To be fair when you type in Xbox theres just Xbox, but with Playstation 3 it could be that or PS3. I expect most would simply type PS3 instead.
