Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Will Nintendo opt to lose money initially on the Wii U? Reggie says "NO" Update

Releasing a system rushed way before it should be released, their gonna suffer some losses at first, but they'll thank themselves later on for it though.

Same way M$ got a head start from the ps3. Same way the 3DS has a head start against the PSVita.

What is this “rushed” you speak of?

WiiU is coming right on time as consoles stay on the market 5-6 years before the successor comes and Wii will have been out for about 5 and a half years before WiiU comes out.

WiiU will not come without the U-pad as it is the soul of the console itself just like the Wiimote was the soul of Wii.

I am thinking that it will come packed with both WiiU-pad and a WiiMote actually plus a game like WiiSports to show of what it can do using both methods separately and with both of them together.

I’m expecting it to cost 300-350 and that is a very good price and they might take a loss of about 20-100 dollars on each but not more.

The GC failed because it was just an upgraded graphics console that people could play on PS2 already. It had nothing new other than the games of course. At that time if the console had released first and with all the 3rd party games that came to PS2 came instead to GC it would have done a lot better.

People say WiiU is taking the same steps as GC but actually it’s not as it has a new gaming interface for home consoles and the appeal to both casual and hardcore.

$250 and lose $30 on each unit sold.

Sell it at cost for $299.99 even. Include a game to raise the value.

At that price they can still probably afford to put a pretty solid chipset in there (4850/4870 equivalent GPU shrunk down, which is considerably above the 360/PS3) along with a good amount of RAM.

I don't think the controller itself even with the touchscreen will cost Nintendo much more than $50 to produce.

Iwata mentioned with the 3DS that chipset costs drop quickly and they expect to be making a profit off the 3DS again soon, the same could happen with the Wii U.

Yea, I am not too sure where all this comparison to the GC is coming from.  For it to be the another GC they would just release an updated system with a bland, dual analog controller.  Nintendo has been focusing more and more on controls (they always have but I would argue more now with the DS, Wii and now Wii U controller).  Controls are the most important aspect of gaming.  Graphics are easily behind controls.  Only graphic whores think otherwise.

I've heard that as a company they don't sell at a loss like sony and microsoft initially do

Why do people think that Ninty cant sell it for 400??? Is it some rule?? Didnt MS sell 360 for that price and it did alright. The guys at Ninty already said it would be costly. So unless they are going to backtrack and cheap out on hardware, which lets be real might be good for them and not good for actual gamers; $300-400 is not outside the realm of possibility.

According to this thread Nintendo will not be selling it at a loss! In fact they are rumored to be selling it at about 200 dollars over your price here.

Exactly, it's going to sell at $600 which means that I will get it in five years.

Allthough, when others do it, its a stupid thing to do...

Yep, it's like sepukku.  It depends on who's doing it.

I don't know what any of you are thinking. People are talking on here about a $600 price-tag, Nintendo selling a console for a loss. Tell me, when has Nintendo ever sold a console at a loss? When has Nintendo ever launched a product for more than $250? Granted, there has been inflation since the Wii launched. Granted, the value of the Yen has risen vs. the US Dollar. Let's be honest though; the Wii U will be manufactured in China. Inflation over the past five years in US Dollars has averaged somewhere near three percent per year. With inflation continuing at this pace by the end of next year (when Nintendo will likely release the console) inflation will have accumulated to about 19.4 percent. If Nintendo wants to launch a console that costs the same as the Wii did in real terms, then it will launch it at $300. Suppose that the Wii U costs slightly more than the Wii did though because of its more advanced technology? Perhaps Nintendo would go as high as $350. And still make a profit.

I know that I don't have as high of a post-count as some of you, but let me tell you whipper-snappers something. I've been paying attention to these trends for many years. I come to this site daily and have been doing so for far too long. Nintendo will not launch this console for more than $400 in the U.S. And I have serious doubts that it will cost more than $350. As for it launching next year...I know what Nintendo said, but let's just wait and see.

Yes they will be ready to lose money, it wont matter the wii made plenty and some losses most likely wont affect them much.

All that money went to some non-selling games that are releasing this year's end.

Not all >.>
