Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Skyward Sword's control scheme too complicated?

It may be more natural to you to swipe, but I like buttons. It's not about what's more natural, it's about how I've been playing games for decades and how I'd like to contrinue to play games for decades to come. Why do I have to do sidways and vertical slices? All I had to do to attack in Zelda OoT was hit a button and that game was perfect. I don't enjoy combat in Skyward Sword more becuase of one to one sword control. I don't feel more like I'm in Hyrule, if anything it makes me feel less so. I'm constatly reminded of the controller in my hand, while a regular controller becomes invisible.

Think of it this way. There was nothing wrong with the control method for Zelda OoT and nothing wrong with the Gamecube version of Zelda TP. It's not like Zelda fans were wishing on every falling star for motion controls. We just wanted more Zelda, based on our love of past Zelda games, which didn't have motion controls yet are consider timeless classics.

I don't think the motion controls add anything positive to the game. I'm having a lot of fun exploreing the world of Skyward Sword, but I'd rather hit a button to do a finishing move then try to remember to jerk both the Wiimote and Nuchuck. Using a shield is now a matter of timing. Attacks are now a game of tic-tac-toe. I just long for the days of buttons and joysticks when using Link's foes fell quickly on his journey while he explored the world and solved puzzles.

All I'm asking for is a classic controls option. I'm a Nintendo fan who never warmed up to Motion controls, even when they work as well as in Skyward Sword. I would have been nice for Nintendo to give us legacy gamers a classic mode in addition to a default motion method.

I don't like swiping, instead I waggle. Call me lazy but it works just as well. But I've yet to find a single moment in the entire game that feels like it's better than standard buttons and joystick.

I'm an old schooler and that's just the way I feel.

I agree. I don't like having to remember various movements to perform simple attacks. I love the game, but I think it would be better if it had the option to use classic controls.

So, you would rather press button A for a sideways slice, button A and forward on the d-pad for vertical slice, and button B for forward stab. Or, you can slice sideways for a sideways slice, swing vertical for a vertical slice, and a forward stab for a forward stab. Maybe it's just me but the latter seems more simple and natural.

I'm also an old school gamer. But that wasn't the issue. It was the controls being complicated. In no way are skyward sword controls more complicated. The skyward sword controls replaces something like 4 different button combinations for sword swings from Zelda OoT with the flick of a wrist. It doesn't get any simpler.

You my have been pushing buttons for decades, but you have been moving your arms all your life.

Please don't try to act like motion controls are just like real life. They are not.

I don't want to flick my wrist, no matter how "simple" it may be. I want standard controls. They work better, they are more presise, and they don't get in the way of me enjoying the world of Zelda.

I don't want to play a motion controlled sword sim. I want to play an adventure game. I don't want to recalibrate every few minutes, I want to press a button and have it work. I don't want to swipe, waggle, jab, thrust, bump, twist, etc., I want to press a button and move a joystick. It really doesn't get any simpler than that.

I'm glad you like it and I'm not saying Nintendo can't do motion controls. All I'm saying is that I, and plenty of people like me, would greatly apreatiate a classic controller option. Give me that and Skyward Sword would be perfect. As it is it's going to have a hard time beating OoT and WW.
