Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Will Microsoft ever lose NA after this Gen?

Live Everywhere and M$'s 3 screen strategy will make it hard for them to lose momentum. PC/Mobile/Xbox will unify in the Cloud and the OS's will be integrated. The ability to share your content in one ecosystem, this will give the consumer more of an incentive to stick with M$.

Sony has a gaming console, no PC OS, no cell phone OS.
Nintendo has a gaming console , no PC OS and no cell phone OS.
Apple has iOS and Mac OS, but no gaming console.
Google has Android OS, but no gaming cosole.
M$ is the only one that has all 3 bases covered and integration among the 3.

You don't have to develop an OS to have an presense.  For example, iTunes runs well on PCs and I am certain there are more Windows iTunes users than there are Mac OS iTunes users.

You are also completely ignoring handhelds, which for the most part share the "mobile" space.  Both Nintendo and Sony have large users bases with their handhelds.

You have obviously never heard of Sony Ericsson or the Xperia Play phone?  It's running a tweaked version of Android OS.

I do think American gamers are more loyal to the Xbox brand than they were to the Sony brand last generation. Being an American product may have a small part, but it had more to do with the Xbox Live service and community it developed and also the fact that MS specifically catered to American tastes so well. I think the PS2 was more just a necessity to play the biggest library of games at the time.

I guess if they royally screw up, they can see some problems. However, I think the gaming press will do their best to protect their image unlike they did with the PS3, mainly due to advertising dollars being thrown around.

Proof of how much the Americans love the Xbox brand can be explained by the hardware reliability issues at the beginning. I thought that would be a big enough screw up to deter people to the competition - but it obviously wasn't. Halo, Gears, and Xbox Live at the time was so important for most people.

Americans love Americans brands? tell that to the Wii.

Considering that it in NA has the possibility to be number 1 of the three and almost certain will be third place in Europe/Japan, yeah you could say Americans love American stuff (=p!)

Notice the bolded.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

I don't think American gamers give a crap about the Xbox being made in America.  The people who care about that stuff are 40 + year olds who buy American cars and stuff.  17 year olds don't think about that stuff when it comes to entertainment.  Just about every country in the world is more patriotic in terms of consumer goods than America is.  But what IS the difference maker is that Microsoft catered to American tastes with their library and Xbox Live.  You hit that nail on the head perfectly.

I agree too, nothing is granted in the future, but MS learned to cater for American tastes better than competitors, so it has higher chances to win there next gen. Sony and Nintendo have higher chances outside of America and WW for the same reasons. And Ninty actually could have kept on winning in America, so having more chances to win next gen too, but it dropped the ball too early, it should have supported Wii better until Wii U launch.

I don't think M$ will ever have to worry about NA.. Maybe even next gen... Just like how Sony never has to worry about Japan.. Only problem is from a completely business (financial) point of view M$ would rather have NA then Japan.. In fact Sony would too... They can never be "PS2 dominate" without NA.. All u have to do is see what percent of all PS2 sales were NA... It's enough to matter

Im sure everybody would have said last gen that Sony wouldnt have to worry about America.... but things have taken a massive turn

I think MS did an amazing job this gen. When I bought my Xbox 360 I did not expect to get anything of the stuff I have right now. Heck I did not even expect to get Resident Evil, GTA, Final Fantasy, Tekken, DMC, MGS etc. let alone Movies, TV shows and all this kind of stuff.

MS is the only one out of the three who made it perfectly clear that Xbox Live is the heart of the Xbox 360. They have more than 35 million XBL users and all of them are connected with each other. So there is a big chance that a big percentage of them will be picking up the next console as soon as one of their friends have it. I know this goes for every console out there, but with XBL you can probably chat with someone playing this over-the-top-freaking-awesome-game you can't play on the Xbox 360. Posting achievements on facebook, you can't have etc etc.

So I think their biggest advantage for next gen is XBL and NA is the place where XBL has most of the features.

This reminds me: How freaking hard can it be to upgrade your XBL friendslist. Do yourself a favour and just do it, MS!
Windows 8, MSN /Windows Live Messenger, Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Windows phone 7, Zune, Xbox Live all need to be connected beyond everything we have seen so far. All you need to do then is to have a $400 release, good line-up of games right from the release and a good marketing campaign.

On the other hand, you can shoot yourself in the foot big time with every new hardware release.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Of course they could. Anything is possible. Both Sony and Nintendo have also been the leaders in NA. The thing is that MS really can't afford to lose it if they want to be successful. NA is definitely their strongest market and they need to do everything in their power to keep it that way.

I don't agree with the brand loyalty thing at all. Americans do not buy things because they are American. If that were the case, the streets out here wouldn't be filled with Japanese cars. The truth is that people are buying the 360 in America the most because they currently like it the best.

If Nintendo can lose after the SNES and Sony after the PS2...yeah anything is possible. Do NOT take anything for granted in the gaming industry
