Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft plans two versions of its next Xbox - rumour

From the sound of this, I suspect that these are two very different machines; and (as a guess) I would suggest that, if this is true, one would be a redesigned XBox 360 and the other would be their next generation platform.

Sounds promising.

This.

People already had hissy fits about the arcade not having a hard drive and holding back the pro this gen. To have 2 vastly different systems would be very stupid.

What do they mean "with optical drive"? As opposed to the second model not having it?

The bigger question is whats up with optical drive and hard disk as opposed to having neither. No optical drive just means the casual one will be exclusively downloadable games but how in the hell are you going to download and install those games without a harddrive. Are we going to have to use usb flashdrives? Anyway this rumor has gotten much more excited about the next xbox. Considering initial rumors about it being super cheap, I feared they wouldn't bother making it that much more powerful and just focuced on perfecting the kinect tech to not have lag.

You forgot about SD/SDHC cards which have dropped vastly in price.  I just picked up a 32 gig SDHC (for my 3DS) for under 40 and there are probably even better deals.  Nintendo has relied on SD cards for the Wii and 3DS.  I only have a 2 gig SD card on my Wii and it still has tons of room even after downloading 60+ VC/WW games (granted they don't take up that much space but still I would never need to get another SD card for the WIi).  Basically, a hard drive is only needed if you want to install regular, retail games onto the hard drive for faster loading.

very bad idea if true. Why not just have one console instead off spreading your different fanbases apart.

Interesting. That would actually be a really good way to do things.

'By holding out baits, he keeps him on the march; then with a body of picked men he lies in wait for him.'

It'll probably just be a differentation in the size of hard-drive and quality of controller, possibly whether it supports wi-fi out of the box too or not.

Sun-Tzuing my way to the necessary 100 posts - Sorry!

This puts more fire to the rumors of MS developing a streaming gaming service like OnLive. The cheaper version could basically be just like the mini-OnLive console and stream all new games to your TV, with support for Kinect and controllers. The Xbox 360 could also have an update to allow this OnLive-like streaming functionality, making them in a sense "forward compatible".

Then the other model would be the full blown 500GB HDD, Blu Ray, 6 Core CPU, new GPU, 4GB or more of RAM powerhouse for playing games locally.

I agree with the streaming model as an option for most single player games, but not for multiplayer. Adding another layer of latency to the multiplayer experience is not a good idea.
