Ok so I'm 17, in my final year at school and I have to apply to university very soon. I have two subjects which I generally do well at and enjoy, history and psychology. Now those are my main two options but I really can't decide what I should study at university. I don't really know what I could use a history degree for, or what being a psychologist (clinical psychologist for example) is like.  I would greatly appreciate if anyone has any experience of studying either history or psychology and what studying them at univeristy is like and what jobs they could possibly lead to. Taking history in university would lead to an academic career, most often in teaching or working in a museum environment. As for psychology there are many different branches and it is a diverse field. I would recommend having a look at the section on careers on the American Psychological Assococation which would be relevent no matter where you are from.

You may benefit from taking a variety of courses in your first year to see if there are other subjects you might enjoy, or even taking a year off (just make sure it is a year, and doesn't turn into 5 or 6). University is costly and you may not want to go just because it is the thing to do. Try scheduling an appointment at your local University with an academic advisor, they can often have great insights.
