Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why do you hate the Wii?

It doesn't look very good on an hdtv, granted I don't have the component cables.

Reasons why I dislike Wii:

Limited controls (Do you mean the motion?)

Not just the motion controls but also inaccessable buttons and the lack of a second analogue stick. Like I said to someone else, it works great for some games like Resident Evil 4 but on a game like Call of Duty, the control scheme falls flat on its face.

Same old franchises that have barely changed or innovated (Please explain)

Mario Kart, Super Mario Brothers, Mario 3D, these games have been released over and over for years, even decades and not many changes are made. It's not only that the games are released over and over without many changes, it's the sheer number of IP's that Nintendo has that they continue to milk yet they never create a new IP.

I must say though, Mario Galaxy, while similar to other Mario 3D games, was a huge step forward. They tried something new and it paid off, what a game.

Reasons why I dislike Nintendo:

All of their products have stupidly high profit margins (This isn't Apple we're talking about. Other than Wii, what Nintendo product has an insanely high profit margin?)

Every one of their consoles really, apart from the 3DS (even though I believe that the losses on the 3DS are being dramatised and soon it will be extremely profitable again). Even last year, the Wii was still £170, I got an ex-display 250gb Xbox 360 slim for £110, those profit margins are huge. The DS is an even bigger culprit, it would cost you over £140 for a DSi last year, which I believe is just as expensive as when the damn thing launched.

Marketing their products towards families, casual gamers and people who don't know any better (This is sure to change with the 3DS/Wii U.)

Or so they say. It's funny because just 5 minutes ago, two advertisements for the 3DS came on. One of them was advertising Nintendogs and the other the pink 3DS. The 3DS has only just come out and the Wii U is roughly a year away, I wouldn't hold your breath.

Alienating hardcore gamers (How?)

Basically, all of my points I made above in my original post back this point up, everything from the controls, to lack of hardcore and 3rd party games. Another great example is operation rainfall, they don't give a shit about the hardcore gamer and that's the main reason why I doubt Nintendo will change next generation.

Franchise milking (Once again, explain.)

Same as the response to "Same old franchises that have barely changed or innovated".

My responses are bolded.

Mine are in italics.

Limited Controls- Which buttons are inacessable, and how are they inacessable? As for the control scheme itself, that's why they have stuff like the Zapper, and CCP. They don't want to force just one control scheme onto you, and it'll be the same way with the Wii U.

Same old franchises that have barely changed or innovated- This is somthing that all publishers, including Sony and MS do, so why is Nintendo singled out here? If you want examples, I'll give you some.

All of their products have stupidly high profit margins- N64, and GCN: Sold at a profit? Yes insanely high profit margins? No. The GCN was MORE powerful than the PS2, and sold at $99/£62 (Direct transfer rates, I don't know how much it really was sold for over there, but you get the point). According to the same people that said the 3DS costs $100 to make, the DSi costs $78 to make. If shipping, and stuff was enough to push the 3DS over the $70 mark it takes to sell it at a loss, what makes you think the DSi isn't the same way. Granted the currency is different, and we live on different corners of the earth, that's as good as I could do.

Marketing their products towards families, casual gamers and people who don't know any better- That "This is not DS, this is 3DS" ad says hi. They will proably market to both demographics like they initially did with the Wii.

Alienating hardcore gamers- They said that they will invest more into 3rd party games, and attract more developers, a good example of this is MH4, which was hinted at as being moneyhatted. Killer Freaks was an example of an exclusive that was influenced, to some extent, by Nintendo. Looking at the 3rd party games confirmed, and hinted at on the Wii U, I'd say that they are finally getting the 3rd party support they need, not to mention several developers have pledged their support for the platform, and stated their interest. Things are looking up.

Operation Rainfall- Don't blame Iwata and Miyamoto for Reggie's ignorance.

i like the wii and most the games. if i want to play HD games i use my pc which gets much better graphics then the ps360. to be fair i think we ought to put up a why do you hate the ps3 and why do you hate the 360 threads as well. as others said the online is pretty bad but i play on my pc if i want excellent online. there are lots of reasons to like wii and lots of reasons not to like wii same with the other two consoles.

Agreed.

Most people just hate Wii because it was  a sucess. Nobody can deny that Nintendo definetely brought new consumers to the market with the Wii and created a new niche consumer, but nobody is forced to be part of that niche (the casuals). So if you´re a casual player, you probably will be ok with the Wii and dislike Xbox/PS3, and if you´re a hardcore gamer, that will be the opposite.

I personally like the Wii because I enjoy games but I don´t have much time to play - or to dedicate myself with challenging games. I also prefer to play with friends instead of playing alone, so for me Wii is perfect as it is. The more acessible, the better. I could find myself more reasons to hate Xbox/PS3 (specially prices), but that´s just the way I enjoy games. Other people enjoy them differently, demanding more challenges, intrincate gameplya, online play or just better and realistic graphics, so the Wii won´t fit their tastes, but also that comes with a price.

The only bad thing about that is the fact that most hardcore gamers do not notice that this variety is good for the market. Not everyone wants to play tons of FPS´s using a 10-button joystick, some people just want to have fun and it´s good if the videogame market can offer something for that kind of consumer too. If it wasn´t like that, why would Sony and Microsoft adopt motion controls ? Giving the consumer the option of choice was what this market really needed when Nintendo lauched the Wii - and sales so far prove that this was true.

6)   Playing Wii Sports resort helped me get my current girl since I invited her over after she joked that I still played video games and that she hasn't in a very long time.

Lol you got a girl coming over to your house to play your Wii and now she's playing with your OTHER Wii. I'm a banned account but I just signed up again cuz I can't pass up this chance to comment on this rofl.

It was actually just Wii Sports not Resort.  I mainly just played the bowling game with her.  Eventually, she would get strikes and we would hug for congrats.  Well eventually the hugging lead to more.  Grats on not getting banned yet!

Wow, lots of ignorance:

1 - If you hate the Wii then you're not a real gamer...

So...hating a console for a laundry-list of legitimate reasons makes you not a real gamer? Classy.

2 - PEople who hate the Wii are all too fat and lazy to get up off their asses

I'd love to get up off my ass, no Wii Game offers me an experience worth standing for. I'll just walk my ass out the front door and go for a walk or something. No harm in that.

3 - You just hate its success

No, I hate the fact that it's successful and chose not to do anything with it. Of the three consoles, the Wii is the best selling worldwide, with the highest software sales, and yet it's still got the weakest lineup of the three, almost no third-party support, and a whole lot of mediocrity. I hate nintendo for squandering a golden opportunity.

My Console Library:

PS5, Switch, XSX

PS4, PS3, PS2, PS1, WiiU, Wii, GCN, N64 SNES, XBO, 360

3DS, DS, GBA, Vita, PSP, Android

Its because it has awful games. The games that are considered good like Mario galaxy and Donkey Kong and Zelda are childish games. Games like Goldeneye were fun but its let down by awful controls.

Thats pretty much it, the system doesnt have any games that are really all that good, multiplatform games are always gonna be worth getting on the other consoles first.

Becouse wii is same like all console  is gay and crap, PC BEST , PC FTW !!!

This forum is very depressing. I'm going to stop reading it now. I can't believe people are okay with sharing why they "hate" the Wii. Why can't their be a "Why do you hate the Xbox 360?" thread? And its not necessarily the thread itself because its not a bad topic, but this thread is an invitation for 360 and PS3 fans and fanboys to come in and bash the Wii and say all it has is rainbows and childs blocks without getting banned. I respect the Wii as a console. It wasn't perfect but I didn't hate it.

This threat was supposed to be partly satirical for this reason - people don't really "hate" on the HD consoles; this seems to be something reserved for the Wii only. It also seems that everyone has something that they dislike about the Wii, and they tend to be more vocal about these points than those against the HD consoles - whether they be Nintendo fans or not.

Unfortunately, too many gamers are like the Metacritic user reviewers -- they just don't get it.
